The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

Royals 1, RAYS 0 (10) (boxscore)

THE GOOD: David Price. Brutal. For the second time this month, David Price was on the losing end of a 1-0 ballgame. And this time he was even better, striking out 8 and walking none in 8 innings.

THE BAD: Knocking The Ball Down. It was an ugly play on many levels. With 2 outs in the bottom of the 10th, the inning should have ended on a groundball to Ben Zobrist. But his throw was wide. And Carlos Pena, was unable to knock down the throw as he may have been distracted by the runner who was clearly inside the baseline. The result was a runner on second base instead of first, who would then score on a weak single…There Are Still Gonna Be Days Like This. Only 2 hits in 10 innings, and the second didn’t come until 2 outs in the 9th. In fact, only twice did the Rays have a runner on base with less than 2 outs. And one of those, Matt Joyce, was picked off first base. And Luke Hochevar? C’mon! It is just the 2nd time this season he has pitched 8 innings. The other? When he shutout the Rays back in June…Anybody Want To Jump Back On The ‘Fire Derek Shelton’ Train? This was the 17th 1-0 loss in Rays history and 7 have occurred since the start of the 2010 season. Also, this was the 5th 1-0 loss in extra innings, and 3 have happened in the last 13 months. To be fair, it takes good pitching to lose 1-0, something the Rays did not have early in their existence. But still, it also takes an offense capable of putrid things. And I am not saying the offense is bad. But it is capable of taking a dump the Trop’s turf a little more often than most teams.

THE TELLING: Evan Longoria started at third base for the first time since April…Luke Scott was back in the lineup at DH and doubled…The Rays are 68-55, and remain 4 games behind the Yankees and 1 game in front of the Orioles.

I may be the only one in the Rays universe who isn’t completely sold on Zobrist at SS over the long haul (yet I love him at 2b, a less demanding position). He looks tired at the plate (is converting to SS wearing him out?), seems to be striking out more and the fielding, we’ll just have to wait and see (but he’s still an upgrade over Elliot defensively).

Last night obviously not a good one for Z.
