RAYS (off-day)

Today’s the day. It’s the return of Evan Longoria. Does that “restore hope” for you, as Martin Fennelly writes forTBO.com?

On the one hand, there has to be a psychological lift for both the team and the fanbase. But there are also reasons to wonder if Longo’s return will help the insufferable offense.

We already knew Longoria was going to be less than 100%. And several people in Durham, including some in the comments here, say Longoria looked well below 100% and that he was “laboring.” Of course, he was there to get his timing back, not necessarily to go all-out. So we’ll have to wait and see.

Also consider that Longo will not be replacing Brooks Conrad or Ryan Roberts. He will be replacing Luke Scott, as the team’s DH. And outside of that one O-for-forever, Scott has been one of the Rays’ better bats this season.

Will Longoria be better than Scott? Probably. But will that improvement be enough to make the Rays a Wild Card favorite? That seems unlikely.

Promote Segovia now. He has had 5 years in the minors and could be Evan Meek’d in the rule five draft. The man hit 330ish in July and .400ish in August. Let’s push him to Charlotte an maybe to AFL.

    • Drew says:

Considering we have ZERO catchers above him on the depth chart with a career OPS over .800 like he has (unless you count Vogt), I agree with your sentiments

  2. Beth says:

What’s the status on Scott’s shoulder? Any chance he can come back and play something other than DH?

    • Raysfan137 says:

Keep thinking someone needs to play 1B once a week or so spell Carlos. He is pressing so hard. I think there would be a psychological relief for him if he were told he was going to share some time. Scott was discussed in Spring as a potential to play 1B some.

  3. Joe says:

Scott should play some 1B and since Evan wont play every day, at least not at first, Luke can go back to DH. He hasn’t said anything about his shoulder, the dude just has a bad back.

Well, he will return Friday and we will see what they do with him. Also time to answer the question I keep asking myself, who loses their roster spot for Luke now that Rhymes is gone?

  4. Hal says:

Why did we just DFA Conrad? I’m certainly not advocating his return, but did we need to make this move for some reason?

    • Ken says:

Yes we did. Evan was moved to the 60 day DL a short while back to help us have active players on the 40 man roster. So to move Evan from the 60 day DL to the 25 man roster someone had to go.
