Thank goodness the Rays didn’t end up needing the run lost by B.J. Upton’s heinous safety squeeze attempt in the sixth inning today. Jimminy Christmas, at least get your hands and the bat out there.
If Joe Maddon and Derek Shelton can’t get these guys to collectively lay down bunts well, then they need to just scratch that play. Though it would be darn valuable to have a better small-ball team for the playoffs.
And thankfully those playoffs are in sharper focus after today’s 5-3 win — and series win — against Kansas City.
James Shields held off an opportunistic Royals lineup while the Rays channeled the July blues and went 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position. Regardless, they got the job done with nine hits, and five runs every night surely will be good enough to exceed the 90-win pace they’re on.
