The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

Indians 10, RAYS 6 (boxscore)

THE GOOD: Hot Scott. Luke Scott may now be as hot as he was cold just a couple of weeks ago. He went 4-4 with a walk last night, his 4th multi-hit game in the last 7…Why Is Desmond Jennings Not Leading Off? BJ Upton and Carlos Pena batted 1-2 for the second straight night and combined to go 0-8 with a 1 walk. Meanwhile, Jennings was back in the 7th spot and went 3-4 with a walk and has 7 hits in his last 5 games.

THE BAD: The Bullpen. I hate putting the bullpen here because they have been so strong recently. And obviously the umpire didn’t help. But that doesn’t make it ok that 4 relievers gave up 9 hits in just 3 innings. There were still chances to shut the door on the Indians and they didn’t…Wasted Offense. The Rays became the first teams since 2009 to have 10 hits and 10 walks in a 9 inning game and still lose. This team is not going to hit very often, so it’s horrible that the Rays would blow a game like this when we know every game counts.

THE TELLING: Two days ago people were saying we shouldn’t be too down on the club because the Rays were still close in the Wild Card. And then yesterday those same people were yelling about how great it was that the Rays were tied for the second Wild Card spot. And now? The Rays are tied for FIFTH place for the second Wild Card. Yes, the Rays are close. But so are six other teams, and only one will get that final spot. And because of that, CoolStandings.com says the Rays have just a 17.4% shot at making the playoffs…Joe Maddon was ejected for the first time this season after being tossed 6 times in 2011.

It makes perfect sense to me that Mr. Matsui continues to occupy a spot on the roster and Leslie remains not even on the 40-man. Perfect sense. Gotta protect those assets.

don't assets indicate value? what value does Matsui bring other that some merch sales in Japan? seriously, can't field, can't hit.

rick ankiel DFA's. why wouldn't he be on our roster tomorrow. project his numbers against BJ's. the best case you can make is BJ has more range. Ankiel has 5x better arm than BJ.

for the rest of the year, what difference would it make. trade upton, get something and offer Ankiel a contract today.

at the worst case, sign him as a backup, send dogzilla packing. i'd much rather have ankiel than fold either. sorry sam, it's true.

Upton probably will have more value at the end of the season because we will get two picks for him, so I am in no hurry to trade him.

However, Rodney (arguably the MVP of this team - if not him, then Price), has more value right now than he ever has or ever will. Dave L said yesterday that there are more buyers than sellers. When does a seller want to be in the market - when supply is low and demand is high. I don't think this team is going to make the playoffs and Rodney will not have the same season next year as he is having now. You could literally get a team's top two prospects for him if they are in the hunt and need a closer. This would be a perfect opportunity to restock the farm system. I think Davis could be our closer of the future anyway.

Upton's offensive numbers are much better than Ankiel's. He is also 5 years younger.

check your facts, didn't the new CBA do away with the type a and b guaranteed stuff?

much better? which ones are much better? bj has had twice as many AB's so their numbers are basically the same.

who cares about 5 years younger? we're not signing either for a long term deal.

Pretty much all of Upton's numbers are better. Better OBP for the past 4 years, better strikeout rate 3 of 4 years, better walk rate, similar BA and power. Check Fangraphs.
