RAYS 4, Yankees 3 (boxscore)

THE GOOD: BJ Upton. Carlos Pena and Ben Zobrist are what they are. But if the Rays are going to score enough runs to win enough ballgames, they need Bossman to go on one of his extended hot streaks. And for the 96th time in his career, he homered last night. That started the scoring for the Rays. He also added a single…Brooks Conrad. He does it again. This time as a pinch-hitter, delivering the big 2-out game-tying double in the 7th…The Boys Are Back Together. Once the Rays took the lead in the bottom of the 7th, it was then up to Joel Peralta and Fernano Rodney and a classic 7+1+1. The Yankees then went 6-up, 6-down and the game was over.

THE BAD: Another Injury. OK, some of you won’t think this is bad, but Hideki Matsui was pulled from the game after experiencing tightness in his hamstring. Of course, the big problem, is, if he needs to go on the DL, who is the replacement? Rich Thompson, Chris Gimenez, and yes, Reid Brignac are on the 40-man roster and available (Stephen Vogt is on the DL)…Matsui’s Glove. I am one of the few people that doesn’t mind Matsui’s bat and think there are still some hits in it. But for the love of baseball gods, somebody needs to feed his glove to BJ Upton’s dog and be done with it. Please stop letting him take a dump on the Trop’s outfield grass.

THE TELLING: Hideki Matsui said after the game that he did not think his injury was enough for a stint on the DL. He thinks he will be out for a few days…Rays are now 6.5 games behind the Yankees, and just one-half game behind the Orioles.

  1. Charles says:

At this point, does it hurt at all to DFA Matsui and bring up Leslie Anderson? Matsui’s bat may have a few more hits in it, but they are all stuck at the bottom of the can like the last few Pringles, and it’s gonna take a lot of effort to get them out. Anderson has no power, but if he can even get on base he’s an upgrade.

  2. Michael says:

If you didn’t see the ESPN broadcast, they did a nice bit on breaking down BJ Uptons problems as a hitter

  3. Stefanie says:

The whole David Price in the background thing was just awkward.

  4. Dre says:

the continued articles about Soriano pulling the shirt out are ridiculous at this point. my favorite point though, is the questioning of whether or not he did this when he was with the Rays. clearly short term memory is getting in the way of the fans when Soriano repeatedly did this against their beloved yanks

  5. John Michael says:

I never thought I’d say this, but I’d prefer to bring Brignac up if someone needs to be called. His offense is awful at the Major League level, but we need defense terribly. Put Reid in at SS and that will take away a few errors (and opposing runs). And who knows? Maybe he might find his swing. He’s hitting .221 with an OBP of .313 at Durham, and even if those numbers drop when he moves up they may still be better than Matsui’s.
