RAYS 4, Indians 2 (boxscore)

THE GOOD: Big Dub. After Matt Moore gave up runs in the 4th and 5th to pull the Indians within one, he walked the leadoff hitter in the 6th. Joe Maddon went to Wade Davis who immediately induced a double-play, followed by a flyball to get out of the inning. He also came in and struck out the leadoff hitter in the 7th…Sawin’ Logs. After hitting a batter to start the 9th, the biggest play of the game may have been Fernando Rodney breaking Shelley Duncan’s bat, causing a weak liner back to Rodney, who then doubled the runner off first base.

THE BAD: Lack of Control. What happened to the pitching staff’s control? Matt Moore walked 5 batters in just 5 innings last night. And over the last 10 games, the Rays pitchers have averaged 4.7 walks per game. After averaging about 3 walks per game in May and June, that number has ballooned to 4.2 in July, the worst mark in the AL this month.

THE TELLING: The Rays are now tied with the Detroit Tigers for the second Wild Card spot. It will be funny when 3 teams tie for the 2nd Wild Card spot forcing 2 games to decide who will play in the 1-game playoff…Julianna Zobrist, wife of Ben, sang the national anthem.
