Playing A Little Pepper

In the discussions between the Angels and the Rays for James Shields, it was reported that pitcher Ervin Santana could be part of the package the Rays receive. Why would they want him?

Santana has been awful this year (6.00 ERA, 5.73 FIP) and he has failed to get out of the 2nd inning in 2 of last 3 starts. Not exactly what a contending team needs in their rotation. So this could be a case where the Angels are just trying to get Santana out of the rotation (they will skip his next start) and out of town and are making him a requirement for any deal. And they may be willing to pay most of the $8 million he is still owed ($7M this year and $1M buyout of 2013 option) to make it happen. As for the Rays, they may be balking at Santana (they have their own better options). Or maybe they think they can flip him in another deal before the deadline. Either way, it is hard to believe the Rays are actually asking for Santana…THEY PROBABLY DON’T

There's no way they should make this trade unless it includes the following in return from the Angels. Bourjos, Conger & C.J. Cron. The Angels have 4 major league 1st baseman they can let one of them go. If we have to add to the deal then we can throw in a reliver, which they seriously need. Gomes, De Los Santos or Lueke are all fair game in my opinion.
