This post, which will appear before every game, will include starting lineups (when we learn them) and during the game will include a Game Graph that will constantly update the percent chance the Rays have of winning this particular game.

Playing A Little Pepper

There are a lot of teams showing interest in James Shields. If the Rays do decide to make a move, where is he most likely to end up?

The two most prominent teams we have heard so far are the Dodgers and the Rangers. However, Shields may just be a back-up plan for both teams. The Dodgers want Ryan Dempster and the Rangers may be trying to land Zack Greinke . If those teams do land those pitchers, the Angels and White Sox would seem to be the front-runners. And White Sox GM Ken Williams tends to be more of a gunslinger…CHICAGO WHITE SOX

Well, the Angles just got Greinke. I think that has to move Texas up on the list of interested teams.

Shields has to go, no longer the man on the Rays staff, his money goes to Price….then sink or swim with the cheap young guys….

????? Com’on man, we’re only 3 1/2 games out with over 60 games to go, we can’t give up yet, besides we had the best record in the league for a good while until we got bit by the injury bug which not only effected our batting, but our D as well. Think about it, if we had just Longo (with still having Joyce, Flash, Bossman, Luke, Neimann, Kyle, etc. all out for long stretches of time) through the season, and made a few less errors, everyone would be singing a different tune, because we would be leading the Wild Card!!!!!

Who said give up? Assuming we trade Shields we get something back that helps the team now. I love how people read into things.

  3. Agree with Don. Price will be very costly at the end of the year if he ends up winning the CY. And small market teams have to anticipate increasing payroll from arbitration eligible players under team control. Must be nice having a 200 million payroll and never having to be concerned about arbitration.

But the White Sox don’t have any prospects. What could they offer in exchange for Shields?

Aha, Cork G., nice article in the Sports Weekly this week on Maddon, though I wanted to tell the newspaper I was holding, “Sshhhh!, don’t tell anyone else about JoeMahism…”, LOL. What a stat, we shift 40% more than the #2 most shifting team (Orioles)…

    • don says:

We strike out 40% more than all the teams ahead of us in the wild card chase, Does that make Maddon a what (coach)???
Remember the days when teams (us) tried to win the DIVISION, what the hell is the “wild card Chase” is that a consulation Prize for losers or what?

Ok, so now that the Angels have landed Greinke, that leaves Chicago, Texas, and the Dodgers. Do any of those teams have anything to offer the Rays for Shields? I’m sure Profar is too much to ask for (but a guy can dream, right?), but it seems to me that the Rangers have the deepest system and, as such, if they’re interested in Shields, they’ve got the most to offer for him. As far as I can tell, neither LA nor the White Sox have the minor league depth to make a deal with the Rays, particularly since the only reason why they’d want to acquire Shields for the next two months is to make a run at the post-season this year (i.e. the only players they have that the Rays might want are everyday players right now). So, it seems like now that the Angels are out of it, Shields is likely to stay put for the rest of the season. Anyone disagree? If so, I’m interested to hear your reasons.

  7. Don says:

Seems like Niemann is about ready, how many more games would shields win than Nieman the rest of the year….one or none,
Shields can’t be payed next year(s), there has to be a bat out there for a starting pitcher in the ML…Friedman thats your job….Do it..
