The Rays activated Matt Joyce from the disabled list today. But rather than waive Hideki Matsui, as some speculated and many fans wanted, the Rays instead optioned Will Rhymes to the minors (via TampaBay.com).

On the surface, this move makes sense as Ben Zobrist will now move back to second base with Joyce reclaiming his spot in right field. But it also makes me wonder how Rhymes can go from being the team’s best option at the leadoff spot two days in a row, to being a worse option than Matsui on the bench? Or maybe one of the worst hitters in baseball shouldn’t have been leading off.

    They probably didn't want Hideki's last at-bat to be a K

Sign of respect, with the full knowledge that Fuld is coming back soon. I'd look for 'deki to get a full plate of pinch hit bids until he can actually make contact with a baseball.

Mr. Matsui said that he will reward the Rays by hitting into one last double play tonight for old time's sake. He intends perform this feat with 1 out in the bottom of the ninth thus ending the game with great honor.

Good call, Hal. Before he retires, he'll up the ante on his Designated Last Out innovation... Designated Last Two Outs

This actually makes more sense for now. We have several more infielders that hit poorly and play shoddy defense but only Matsui as an outfielder.

Does this mean Joyce gets to hit against lefties?
