The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

Royals 8, RAYS 0 (boxscore)

THE GOOD: Alex Cobb. The Rays had a depleted bullpen so it was sink or swim with Alex Cobb last night. So why is he in the good? Because if he gets pulled early, the bullpen would still be screwed up tonight. But he took one of the team and worked 8 innings despite getting pounded early. Of course, when Jim Hickey visited the mound early in the game, it might have gone like this:

Hickey: How ya feelin’?
Cobb: *not making eye contact* Can you tell Joe to come get me
Hickey: Sorry. You gotta take the bullet tonight.
Cobb. But this mean Royals team is hitting everything I’ve got *lip quivering*
Hickey: Shut up. Good luck kid *walks away*

THE BAD: Support. Alex Cobb became just the third starting pitcher in the big leagues since 2000 to pitch at least 8 innings and give up at least 8 runs. But it wouldn’t have mattered if he had only allowed 1 run. The Rays were losing this game.

THE TELLING: Will Rhymes was a “couple” of pitches away from coming in as a relief pitcher. He hasn’t pitched since he was 12. Also, Hideki Matsui was apparently campaigning to pitch. If that would have happened, the Japanese media would have never recovered.
