The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

RAYS 5, Nationals 4 (boxscore)

THE GOOD: Carlos Pena. It’s like Pena realized he can’t keep waiting around for Evan Longoria to come back and protect him in the lineup. Instead, Pena is taking things in his own hands. He had 2 more hits last night and now has 3 straight 2-hit games. The big blow was his 2-run home run. And as usual, the best part of his home run was that it was to center field. When Pena uses the entire field, it is often a sign that he is seeing the pitches better and is going to get hot…Jake McGee. It was supposed to be a classic 7-1-1 game. That is, David Price worked 7 strong innings and then he hands the ball of to Joel Peralta who then gives it to Fernando Rodney for the 9th inning. But after Peralta was ejected, McGee was unexpectedly needed. And without his typical warmup, he came into a 1-run game, threw 8 straight fastballs and got 3 straight groundouts.

THE BAD: More Players Gone. The big one of course is Joel Peralta who is facing probably a 10-game suspension. But on a lesser note was Matt Joyce being pulled from the game because of “tightness” in his back.

THE TELLING: Rays are now 38-29, 3 games behind the Yankees and one-half game behind the Orioles.
