The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

Mets 11, RAYS 2 (boxscore)

THE GOOD: Getting On. We’re digging deep for something positive to say about last night’s game. So there is this. The Rays had runners on base in each of the first 7 innings…Alex Cobb. Joe Maddon was his usual upbeat self after the game saying he thought Cobb looked “really good,” so we’ll take his word for it. Obviously the defense didn’t help, and nor did the bullpen. And there were definitely some good moments in the middle. But it still looked like a shaky outing overall.

THE BAD: The Mets? Number of times the Mets had scored more than 10 runs this season: ZERO…Ike Davis? Number of home runs Ike Davis had hit in previous 81 at bats: ZERO. Times Ike Davis faced JP Howell in previous 81 at bats: ZERO…At Home? In their last 17 games at the Trop, the Rays are 6-11…In the Field? Two more errors. Another unearned run. In 2011, the Rays allowed 37 unearned runs. This year, they have already given up 32, and there are 101 games to go…JP Howell? Enough already. We are tired of defending this guy. He’s done.  He needs an extended DL vacation to figure out what is wrong. But a guy that throws 85 can’t miss his spots by TWO FEET (more later). D-O-N-E. Good bye.

THE TELLING: Ben Zobrist is still sore from being hit in the hand with a thrown ball, but x-rays were negative…BJ Upton (not wearing stirrups last night) is hitting .319 in his last 23 games…The Rays are now 35-26, one game behind the Yankees and tied with the Orioles…

Toledo 8, DURHAM 3. Jim Paduch lasted just 1.2 innings, giving up 5 runs on 4 hits, including 2 home runs…Alex Torres also gave up 2 runs (1 earned) and allowed 7 hits and a walk in just 2.2 innings…1B Henry Wrigley went 1-3 with an RBI…DH Leslie Anderson was 0-4.

MONTGOMERY. no game scheduled

CHARLOTTE 8, Jupiter 5. 1B Philip Wunderlich had 3 hits and scored 3 times…CF Mikie Mahtook went 1-5 and stole his 14th base.

BOWLING GREEN 6, West Michigan 2. Roberto Gomez allowed 2 runs on 7 hits and 1 walk in 6.2 innings. He struck out 4 and now has a 2.79 ERA…RF Drew Vettleson was 2-4 with his 5th home run…1B Cameron Seitzer hit his 1st home run of the year and CF Todd Glaesmann added his 9th…DH Josh Sale went 1-3 and is hitting .313.

Here’s Brian Anderson (probably) reading some prepared notes and mispronouncing a key word. Key moment is at 0:22. Oops…

cork i've said it all along, JP howell isn't even a loogy anymore. he's left handed batting practice. extended dl? hardly, he had the entire offseason to figure it out. all we heard from him and the rays last year was that he was 100% healthy but it takes time to come back. all we heard in the offseason and spring training was that he was ready to make a huge contribution to this team this year.

he stunk last year, and he stinks this year. we should have sent him on his way a long time ago, but this is a madden/FO move to re-sign him and to show us that they are smarter than we are type of thing. it should have been obvious to all that he was completely done after last season, yet we gave him another deal. we've blown almost $3million and a valuable roster spot on him in the past two seasons.

it's time to send the left handed andy sonnanstine on his way. the dude needs to be put out to pasture.

    • Cork Gaines says:

I dont necessarily disagree. But the Rays HATE just throwing something away, especially pitchers. So they will keep him as long as possible and see if they can make it work. That's why i think the DL is coming. Put him on the DL for a couple of weeks to go to Port Charlotte and just workout. Then give him three weeks on a rehab stint and see if it gets better. At that point reevaluate.

      • s says:

i just don't see how sending him down is going to do anything. how many high pressure situations against MLB quality batters is he going to get in pt charlotte? will striking out a kid with his "stuff" boost his confidence? sure, but that will only last until he gets blasted again against the big boys.

he's had enough chances, enough time, and enough rehab. he blew opportunity after opportunity last year, the rays gave him an entire season in the majors to rehab, it's time to free up a spot in the bullpen.

  2. Rob says:

That was possibly one of the most painful games to watch I've ever seen.

  3. Beth says:

I agree that the DL would be a good move for JP before they give up on him. He's getting very little playing time as part of a bullpen that has been surprisingly effective. And then he gets brought into a high leverage situation, so his mistakes are very costly.

Meanwhile, Brandon Gomes has been fabulous in Durham, and he clearly has earned another shot.

But this loss was not entirely about Howell. My philosophy is that when you have as many errors as runs, blame for the loss can't rest with the pitcher.

    • Gus says:

Howell is being misused in addition to being bad. He needs work to see if he can still pitch. I'd actually start him again in Durham and see if he can find it. Hard to see him ever finding it with the spot duty in the bigs he's getting given the tough results. I think Maddon feels personally guilty for pitching JP's arm off in 2008-09, where he was up throwing virtually every game.

In 337 innings at SS last year Johnson made 1 error. He's made 7 in 275 innings (approximiately 30 games). You can't keep playing him at SS, can you? He's a mess. S-rod the better option at SS (2 errors at SS in 225 innings).

Do you think the increased shifting this season is contributing to the poor fielding epidemic on the entire team (nobody seems immune)?

  4. Greg says:

Epitome - intentionally mispronounced by BA. He's not an idiot. In fact, he'll go the way of Joe Magrane by the looks of it. He's doing some national broadcasts and is, in fact, excellent.

    • Cork Gaines says:

Easy. Put the knife down. Nobody called BA an idiot. We think BA is great. If anything we are just ribbing him.

And if you think it was intentional that's fine. But what would be the reason for intentionally mispronouncing the word in a way that many people do mispronounce it? Something that is even more common when the word is being read.
