The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

RAYS (boxscore)

THE GOOD: Alex Cobb. Cobb pitched a solid 7 innings giving up just 2 runs on just 2 hits and a walk. You can’t ask for more than that from a rookie pitching in Replica Yankee Stadium. What? Joe Maddon kept him for the start of the 8th inning? On a day when only one relief pitcher was unavailable? Well, let’s just pretend like that didn’t happen, and charge those runs to Maddon.

THE BAD: The Offense. Things looked good when Desmond Jennings led off the game with a single. But then the next 23 batters went 0-21 with a walk and a hit-by-pitch before Sean Rodriguez doubled in the 8th inning.

THE TELLING: The loss drops the Rays into third place, 1 game behind the Orioles and a half-game behind the Yankees…With Brandon Allen being designated for assignment yesterday, we should remember that it was almost exactly one year ago that the Rays did the same thing with Dan Johnson.

  1. Michael says:

A lot of warning track power last night.

    I'll live with it.

Desmond Jennings' triple made the whole grueling experience worth it.

    Glad he can run already

  2. phil says:

Hey Cork, Kinda off subject but where is Tyler Guerrier playing this year? I know he is in Extended spring training but where will he play in June?

Also, any idea how he is doing?

  3. Rob says:

How do we not pick up a run with a guy at third and nobody out?

    • Joe says:

Heh, imagine if it was 2-1 instead of 4-1. There would be a whole lot more "season is over" talk going on after that

  4. Brianknowsbest says:

The Good: Back to back triples, flash and bossman. When longoria is in the lineup , if those two have back to back triples we are usually in for a big inning.

  5. Joe says:

Zobrist is trying to get his AVG back to normal in 1 swing. He hasn't been swinging well all year so for a while, he took his walks but now he just swings at hopes. Not exactly what I want to see from a guy who was our most consistent hitter and fielder...

    • Hal says:

He really needs to sit and watch a couple of games. Just clear his head. His swings are just awful right now. When he does make contact he just rolls over the ball and hits weak double play balls. Some of his swings last night were just silly. But who plays for him? The alternatives don't exactly inspire.

And Matsui is tearing up the warning track.

I hate when the Rays get to this point every year.

      • CC says:

If I hear the guys on TV talk about Zobrist only hitting 203 but ids still getting on base via walks. My head is gonna explode.

  6. Chris D says:

Hated hated hated that Joe left Cobb out there to hang in the 8th inning. What in the world did that accomplish? The entire pen was available practically and instead you ruin the kid's confidence.

    Terrible job there of managing.

    • Joe says:

He should of been out of the game but don't worry about his confidence. The kid is a Hellickson clone, he's already done well in Yankee Stadium and Fenway this year, he will be just fine when he faces the Mets next.
