The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

White Sox 2, RAYS 1 (boxscore)

THE GOOD: Matt Moore. Double-Nickel still throws too many fastballs up in the zone. Of his 71 fastballs, only 25 were below the mid-point of the strikezone. But he was able to get away with it yesterday because he had his other pitches working, and those were more consistently down in the zone. He had 8 swing-and-misses on non-fastballs, a good healthy total for him. As a result, he was able to work 7 innings, striking out 10 and walking just 1…Jose Lobaton. It was nice to see Lobotron back in the lineup. And despite struggling with the bat on his rehab assignment, he came through with a single, driving in the Rays’ lone run.

THE BAD: Lefties. Let’s face it, this team is going to struggle against lefties until Evan Longoria and Desmond Jennings get back. Yesterday they went 3-30 with 15 strikeouts and just 2 walks. That’s not going to win a lot of ballgames.

THE TELLING: Jose Lobaton was activated prior to the game and Chris Gimenez was sent back to Durham…The Rays are now a half-game behind the Orioles in the East, and 2 games ahead of the White Sox and Yankees in the Wild Card race.

  • If you missed it last night, Hideki Matsui will join the Rays today. Look for Stephen Vogt to be demoted. Also, sounds like Matsui will wear no. 35.
  • Kyle Farnsworth is hoping to return in late June. And Desmond Jennings is still another week away or so. []
  • Joe Maddon tried to break the ice following Friday’s game by screaming obscenities…about his dog? []
  • Joe Maddon liked how Fernando Rodney rebounded on Sunday. []
  • This is strange. According to Elliot Johnson, this is his brother, who was drafted by the Rays THREE TIMES, and yet never played in the Rays organization. [Baseball-Reference]

Camera guys don’t get enough credit. Watch how quickly this camera determines that Ben Zobrist will make the play (not BJ Upton), zooms in, focuses, and sticks with Zobrist for the great diving grab. That can’t be easy…

  1. NashVegas Ryan says:

Any updates on when Longo and Flash will be returning to the team?

    • Cork Gaines says:

Jennings will likely start a rehab assignment next week. So he is 2-3 weeks away still. Longo is more up in the air, although it sounds like he could start a rehab assignment in a couple of weeks. But nothing set in stone yet.

      • Alex says:

Any update on Joshua Sale? He still hasn't played since he was removed from the game and he's not on the DL

  2. Dave L says:

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Anyone surprised or upset about how yesterday went down need to step back and take an objective look at our weaknesses as a batting lineup.

Getting creamed by Sale when he pitched like that was inevitable no matter what combo of batters Joe trotted out there because we dont have the right handed horses right now.

I take solace in the fact that MM pitched great against a lineup 5x more powerful and HOT than ours and we didn't get no hit and made it a game till the end seriously.
