The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

A’s 9, RAYS 5 (boxscore)

THE GOOD: Sean’s Glove. The one good highlight of the game might have been the one after the game was long decided. Sean Rodriguez made a lovely diving grab and throw to get Brandon Inge, that suddenly had us asking, “Reid who?”…Bossman Still Hot. BJ Upton only had one hit, but it was a home run. And he also added 3 walks, raising his OBP to .410. If he had enough plate appearances, that would rank 7th in the AL.

THE BAD: Another Injury. Desmond Jennings left Sunday’s game early with “left knee soreness”…Matt Moore Up. A team that has a 4-run lead after the first inning wins about 91% of the time. So if you are Matt Moore, you can’t give up a 5-spot in one inning and lose the lead. And Moore’s biggest problem, as pointed out by Andy Freed and Dave Wills, is that Moore can’t keep his pitches down. Of Moore’s 105 pitches, only 40 were below the mid-point of the strikezone. And six of those were more than 6 inches below the strikezone. Unfortunately, this is a bad habit he probably picked up in the minors, more than being a mechanical flaw. Minor league hitters can’t catch up to a good fastball up in the zone. Big league hitters will also struggle with that pitch, but only if they are looking for a pitch down. If all the pitches are up, that pitch is not a problem.

THE TELLING: The Rays are now 19-10, 0.5 games behind the Orioles, 3.5 games ahead of the Yankees, and 7 games ahead of the Red Sox.

  • Ken Rosenthal notes that the extra wild card will mean more teams will be buyers at the trade deadline. The good news, as noted by Rosenthal is that the Rays could get more for one of their pitchers. The bad news that he doesn’t mention is that the Rays are now even less likely to add a piece at the deadline as prices go up. [MLBTR]

  1. don says:

For those who wondered WHy Moore would sign a long term contract before every proving how good he is...Think I was the one who said he was a good minor league pitcher who had a chance to make it in the majors, hes still working on that with plenty of Rays money in his pocket...
    good move Matt boy...

  2. don says:

Just noticed Luke Scott "dancing" think I seen him in a Rap video... esp. with his hand in his crouch, his batting Avg. now after 30 days is below Damon .260 (2012).....0 for SAT/Sun really helped our losses...maybe out dancing?

    • JAD says:

Wish we had Damon over Scott.....His .235 average and 0 HR and 2RBI's would be a blessing.

  3. Dre says:

two things: i think will rhymes deserves a little love too. he had an pretty awesome grab and throw from his knees.
also, when maddon said "holy s#@$" he also said "un-f@#$ing-believable". pretty obvious and hilarious

  4. Jason C says:

Hmmm, no comment about Upton? Im shocked, don.

  5. Gus says:

Please no more Elliot Johnson; he can't bunt. he can't play OF, he can't steal bases, yet Maddon insists on trying to make him into something he is not. At what point does he play himself out of the major leagues? How unproductive and mistake-prone can you be. Letting that ball drop on the warning track was a game-ender.

Maddon's 2-strike bunting is killing this team. Besides the obvious reason not to do it (foul=K), the other reason not to do it is that teams don't give you good pitches to bunt with 2 strikes. A suicide squeeze on a waste pitch is just baseball suicide.

  6. don says:

The reason Maddon is so good he does things no other manager would do..2 strike bunts and a man on 3rd with one one has ever thought about doing that ..I guarantee...Genius...
one run loss by the way..really bad luck..I think..

    • Jason C says:

Probably a really good chance that about 25+ teams would love to have him leading their teams...just guessing, of course.

    • Gus says:

Maddon is great, but not all of Maddon's ideas are good ones. I'm all for trying, but after 4 failed 2 strike bunt attempts, I think we can put that one in the "Fail" pile and try something else. It cost them Saturday night's game, flat out.

As for Elliot Johnson, I think we can put him with Percival and Camp as guys Joe loved, but loved beyond what the data tells us. If he was rational with Elliot Johnson, EJ wouldn't be on the team. He's no Picasso.
