Playing A Little Pepper

With BJ Upton the latest injured player, and Evan Longoria already on the shelf for 2 months, do the Rays need to go out and trade for a bat?

Another bat sure would be nice right now. But remember two things: 1) this team is built on pitching and defense. Offense is just bonus; 2) It would be expensive to add an impact bat. And the Rays are not going to pay that price for a player that might not have a position in 2 months. Maybe the Rays add some depth, but they’re not going to add a starter…RAYS CAN ONLY HOPE FOR THE BEST

All of the blogs and media guys are saying that it doesn't make sense to trade for a guy who might not have a position in 2 months. Of course, that's intuitively obvious. But might not this Longo situation raise the priority of trading for another position that also brings a stronger bat (e.g. catcher) ? A position that has already been speculated about potential activity near trade deadline time ?

    • SeanDubbs says:

Pretty sure the Rays have already been trying to do that the last 3 seasons.

      • Andy says:

Hope that's right b/c during that time, Seattle got Montero from the Yanks & Texas got Napoli from Angels. Oh yeah, & we passed over Buster Posey, too. Nap might have been too pricey, but I think the other 2 (& possibly more) are legit questions. You'd think w/Maddon being a former catcher, there's be more of a priority on this!! 🙁

  2. Hal says:

Would have been interesting if Longo's injury happened 2 days earlier - Inge would probably be a Ray now.

  3. Cork Gaines says:

BJ Upton says he can come off the bench if needed today. But of course, that would be surprising if he did. If he's OK, Maddon will want this chance to give him some rest.

  4. Gus says:

Guyer is having the worst spring ever. First Bush hijacks his car and is getting him sued all over Florida. Then, he keeps hurting himself when he should be in the bigs. This is his opening.

What does Leslie Anderson need to do to get a shot? He's hitting .355 and he's older than dirt.

  5. Leighroy says:

I find it pretty ironic that the AL East standings are complete opposite of the 2007 final standings. It really puts in perspective how up is down and right is left this year, compared to the traditional thoughts of who the power teams are in baseball.

  6. Don says:

Keppinger is the "bat they need". is Maddon blind. Kepp hasn't played for a week.& he is one of our best hitters....COme on Maddon wake up,
Zobrist in OF , Kepp Every day in infield, who cares about BJ. and let longo rest..hes sore?

  7. Paul says:

Anyone know the lowest run differential, historically, in a 4 game sweep? We hold this score, surely we must be close to the record? We are only 1 over the minimum so far...

  8. Paul says:

Well, I challenge anyone to prove that we haven't at least broken a record of sorts, or at least equalled it.

4 game sweep with a 5 run differential is something special.

  9. I think the Rays have already addressed this with Hedeki Matsuo, the play in LF yesterday was atrocious. Matsuo can play the OF and help with his bat.

  10. Dave L says:

What everyone here seems to forget is that without Longo and BJ all our run production is coming from the left side which leaves us vulnerable to southpaws, and I mean no hit kind of vulnerable.

SRod, Molina, Jiminez, EJ, Allen and if Keppinger is your big bat out of that group.... well we are in for a rude awakening. It looks fine now cause we are in a home stretch against the weak sisters of the West with all ho-hum RHP.

We dont face a lefty until Sunday so the hit show will continue hopefully.

  11. Jason C. says:

So, how do we match up with the Angels in terms of trade partners? I'd love to see about getting Trumbo.
