According to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times, the Tampa Bay Rays did a 5.4 television rating in April, up 71% from the same month last year.
This is obviously a strong improvement over last season, when the Rays started horribly in April, and were never really in the playoff hunt until the final two weeks of the season.
But it is also not that unusual.
The Rays finished fifth in television ratings in 2010, with a 5.9 average rating, despite finishing 22nd in attendance. This suggests that last year’s poor ratings were the exception, and not the rule.
Of course, the good news is, this once again shows that people in the Tampa-St. Pete area are interested in the Rays, even if they are not going to the games in numbers that would please the national media.
