According to Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times (via Twitter), Hideki Matsui will be promoted and join the Rays tomorrow. The Rays have yet to announce who will be removed from the roster.

Matsui was just 6-36 (.167) in 13 games at triple-A Durham, with nine strikeouts and four walks. He had one extra-base hit, a double.

One issue will be his number. Matsui has always worn no. 55 during his big league career. He also wore that number with the Durham Bulls. It also happens to be Matt Moore’s number.

But as a commenter correctly point out, baseball’s new CBA makes it very difficult for players to change numbers without giving MLB plenty of notice. So even if Moore was willing to sell his number, somebody would have to write a big check to the apparel company.

And that’s too bad for Moore. In addition to some cash, he might have been able to dip into Matsui’s vast porn collection.

doesn’t the new CBA prevent this from happening? I thought a player had to give a year’s notice if they wished to change numbers, which I would assume extends to number buyouts. I know every man has his price but I’ll be pissed if matsui gets to wear 55 for only several months and to hit .200 after I bought a moore #55 already.
