The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

Red Sox 12, RAYS 2 (boxscore)

THE GOOD: Wade Davis. Big Dub was the lone bright spot for the Rays, tossing 3 shutout innings. His fastball topped out at just 93, but he did get 3 swinging strikes on fastballs (good locations) and five overall.

THE BAD: David Price. It just wasn’t there for King David, giving up 3 runs on 4 hits and 3 walks. He lasted just 3 innings. It was his shortest outing as a starter since 2009 when he lasted just 1.1 innings in a start against the Rangers…The Bullpen. Joel Peralta and Josh Lueke combined to give up 8 runs in the 8th inning. Just ugly, ugly baseball.

THE TELLING: Jeremy Hellickson will start today…Josh Lueke was demoted to triple-A following the game, with Dane de la Rosa called up to replace him…Luke Scott returned to action when he pinch-hit in the 7th inning. He received a small round of boos as he was introduced...BJ Upton had a single and then stole second and third during his rehab assignment game. He finished 1-3.

  • Matt Garza had a pretty funny brainfart, surprising nobody. [BI Sports]
  • Rays minor league catcher Craig Albernaz pitched a perfect inning on Thursday, and another scoreless inning last night. This is not that unusual. This was the sixth and seventh times in his minor league career that Albernaz has been used as a pitcher, including three times last year. [WDBB]
  • Joe Maddon found humor in the sh*tstorm caused by Bobby Valentine doing a regular spot on a New York radio station. Maddon noted that he doesn’t even have a regular spot on the Tampa Bay stations. []
  • If the Bucs do draft Trent Richardson, sounds like they would be getting a good player and a good person. [BI Sports]

Can You tell this was Kelly Shoppach’s first career stolen base?

Reid Brignac with a nifty little flip to start the double-play…

Here’s Reid Brignac taking out Evan Longoria just as Longo was about to make a catch…

The Rays have (had) four Bulls relievers on the 40-man: Gomes, Gaub, Ramos, and De La Rosa. De La Rosa had the worst numbers of the bunch so I can't figure this. Maybe, just maybe, the most rest since De La Rosa's last appearance was on the 11th. Or maybe his truly awful appearance on April 6 is skewing his numbers and the folks in the dugout are confident. Or maybe they just think that Gomes isn't ready yet. At any rate, good luck. Send us a starter would ya? Or maybe not ...

"King david" heads to the bottom of this rotation, who is he better than? See if he is playing with the plastic Dog today during the game.....

  3. Dave L says:

Shoppach box score looked like a typical months' production when he was a Ray + a steal which will forever be immortalized on some montage they play in between innings to Benny Hill music at stadium forevermore

On a day like that its best to forget the negatives, it was just one of those days and hopefully kinda good that they all got bunched up on 1 day and you can only get 1 loss per game.

One thing I guarantee, The Rangers and Sox were damn well happy to see Wade leave the game.

I wonder if the Rays are setting him up for the bullpen long term or stashing him there till someone inevitably goes down for a spell?

Seems the former, otherwise I would leave him in if he's hot like either of the last 2 days and let him finish games especially with no defined closer. Although obviously that would make him available less often.

A warmed up Wade who has a successful inning or two under his belt is a much better option than anyone else we have in the pen right now.

He looks like a man on a mission. i like it.
