Jack Curry of the Yes Network is reporting that the Rays will sign Hideki Matsui to a minor league deal.

It is hard to believe Matsui is anything by insurance in case something happens to Luke Scott and his surgically repaired shoulder.

Matsui hit .251 with 12 home runs and a .306 wOBA in 141 game with the A’s last season.

I don’t get this signing. Yes, depth. But, why sign a guy like Matsui when you just picked up a guy like Allen. My head is going bald from the head-scratching.

Matsui is somebody the Rays have had an eye for a few years. And in his prime he definitely fit the Rays profile for an ideal DH, but he was just a little too expensive. Now that he is unwanted, he is probably dirt cheap, and the Rays figured why not see if they get lucky and he has one more decent season in him.

Makes you wonder if they plan on giving Scott some DL time to rest that hammy. If not, then Matsui gives them another bat during September and the Rays may have thought they should get him now before someone else does.

Im sure he comes pretty cheap at 38. He batted around .250 last year and seeing our depth doesnt include anyone who has hit over .220 in the majors and a whole lots of prospects, I’ll take him.

Is Scott more physically damaged than we’re being told?

Rays are the “Sanford and Son” of ML baseball…you look at enough junk you just might find a treasure….Do we have a helmet big enough for his head! were going to have a full asssortment of 40 yo DHs to chose from… less (.260) Damon
