The Rays have announced that they have claimed 1B/OF Brandon Allen off of waivers from the Oakland A’s. To make room on the 40-man roster, Robinson Chirinos has been moved to the 60-day DL.

Allen is expected to be added to the Rays active roster on Friday.

Allen has played in 109 big league games over the last four seasons, hitting .205 with 11 home runs, three stolen bases, and a .291 wOBA.

He has shown some pop in the minor leagues, hitting 21 home runs in just 93 triple-A games last season.

With BJ Upton expected to rejoin the Rays on Friday, it will be interesting to see who will be on the way out. Stephen Vogt will be one of the players demoted. The other could be Elliot Johnson. However, EJ is out of minor league options and would have to clear waivers.

    Another .200 hitting slugger…Damon hit .260,15 hrs, 80 rbis for $1mil + incentives…. good pass…..

Damon’s salary last year with those numbers was $5.25 million. You don’t know that he will hit like that for the $1.25 million plus another $1.4 million based on plate appearances, which he will have to achieve if he wants to get anywhere near those numbers. So, that is really $2.65 million, and he might have a good year, but any judgement about it now is just speculation. If Brandon Allen joins the club he will make at most $400K. $2 million is a lot when it’s yours.

I hope Elliot is the one to go. Neither him or Reid do much hitting but Reid’s defense has become a 2nd closer for the Rays this year. I wonder how his foot is these days.

This lineup is missing BJ terribly, that cannot be denied.

Too many AAA guys starting for us this first fortnight of the season.

    Vogt is obviously not ready.
