According to Marc Topkin, Matt Moore will miss his scheduled batting practice session today with what is hopefully a minor injury…

Rookie LHP Matt Moore will indeed miss his scheduled batting practice session today due to what the Rays are calling “a mild lower abdominal strain”…Moore said it has been bothering him since Friday, when it popped up during his second bullpen session of the spring, and “it feels like a sore muscle.”

This is not the news we needed to hear. Injuries to abdominal muscles can often be the kind that linger so expect the Rays to be very patient and extremely cautious with their prized prospect.

Of course, if Moore is sidelined for more than a week or two, it would give the Rays a convenient excuse to start Moore in triple-A and give him a handful of starts on the farm before calling him up permanently.

I don’t know…the whole “convenient excuse” to go to Triple-A thing is a moot point now with the guaranteed contract, right? Only way he’s in Triple-A is if he’s rehabbing and they are being cautious…nothing convenient about it.

And THIS is the reason the Rays will keep 6 starters!

I don’t see this as “convenient”. The Rays play 16 games during the month of April against the NYY, Det, Red Sox, LAA and TX. These are all playoff caliber teams. Toronto and the Twins will not be easy either. They can’t afford to start out in April like they did in 2009. We need Moore and Scott to be ready by opening day!!

Yeah I don’t know why the Rays would want their most talented pitcher in the minors even though his arbitration clock is off now due to the offseason contract extension. I don’t think this is a big deal, it is ST batting practice for an AL pitcher after all.
