Stuart Sternberg was on hand Saturday night to accept Joe Maddon’s Manager of the Year award and Jeremy Hellickson’s Rookie of the Year award. Sternberg, showing his lighter side, joked that he drove down from posh Westchester County because the team couldn’t afford airfare for Maddon and Hellickson. He also said that the awards would later be put up for auction to help pay for Carlos Pena’s new contract.

I think Sternberg’s lines are pretty funny, but he doesn’t really get laughs. Maybe his poor delivery, or maybe the audience thought he was serious?
Perhaps they are tired of his “poor me” rhetoric and revenue-share collections?
Perhaps they couldn’t detect his sarcasm?
Perhaps they, as MLB decision makers, don’t want to be seen laughing at “poor” jokes when they are all in cahoots and making plenty of cash?
Perhaps they aren’t even listening?
Probably a mix.
Or, and maybe this is just me, there is only like 30-40 people in the room.
true
I thought it was pretty funny. Its nice to see these guys have a little fun with moments like this and show their lighter side.
