If you have been hanging around these parts for a while, you know that the model for this site is to tell you what the Rays have done, what they are doing and try to project what they will do based on what we have learned. Think of RI as “Tampa Bay Rays 101.”

However, for the next 12 days we will step away from the standard, and we present to you 12 “presents” the Tampa Bay Rays should give to their fans. Looking back at last year’s 12 Days of Raysmas, we see that many of our wishes came true. Many did not. If we can get a couple of more this year, the Rays might just win it all.

Without further ado…

On the tenth day of Raysmas, the Tampa Bay Rays gave to us, $10 MILLION ADDED TO THE 2012 PAYROLL…

The 2012 Tampa Bay Rays have a chance to be something really special. Depending on how this winter shakes out, you can make an argument that the Rays have as good a chance of winning the American League as anybody.

But that means adding a big league bat…or two.

With the signing of Fernando Rodney, the Rays projected payroll for 2012 is ~$55 million. We’d feel a lot more comfortable at $65 million. That is still just one-third of the Yankees payroll, and likely just as talented of a roster.

So folks…We already asked for an $8 million bat (Carlos Pena?). But if you were Andrew Friedman, and Stuart Sternberg gave you $10 million to spend any way you want, what would you do?

I sign Carlos Pena for 7 million, Friedman can beat Boras at his own game and Damon for 3 million, no one else is interested and he is 38, can only DH. Damon will be taking a paycut. I also trade for Rizzo because he is our future and Pena is hopefully just a 1 year deal.

Looking at this http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012-mlb-free-agents, I'm thinking our money would be best allocated by staying away from the free agent market. All the trades we've been talking about would be the best way to go about getting a bat, and they wouldn't even use $10mil.

If they sign Carlos Pena for $7-8 mil I'm Jumping off the 3rd floor section 308 right on Friedmans head and never going to a Rays game again...BUT you know Boras has a way of making GMs look like the DumBasses they are...

Friedman may meet his match in Boras but no one is going to make Andrew look like a fool. If Pena starts asking for 10 million a year for 2 or 3 years, Friedman will just forget about him. Only buisness I see Friedman and Boras doing is the re signing of Damon. That is of course unless, we can get him to talk about Hellickson/Jennings extensions.

Ok so Hamilton and Burrell were mistakes except no one saw Josh becoming a beast jumping from walking naked down streets, stoned to the big leagues and everyone loved the Burrell signing. Yes, I wish we took Posey but the idea at the time was that Beckham had a higher ceiling. I mean that guy is STILL only 21 and now he may be in the big leagues by the 2nd half. Despite what people like you may think, he's not a bust, not yet. He is a 21 year old who has been improving and has reached Durham.
