The Rays recently held their Winter Development program at Tropicana Field. And it allowed us to get our first look at some of the Rays top draft picks from the 2011 draft, as well as some other top prospects.

How good does it feel to see players in TB caps at The Trop?

Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy!

I’m curious about Derek Dietrich…he had a great offensive year, and was a 2nd round pick, so it shouldn’t come as a huge surprise. Are the Rays thinking that he can stick at shortstop? Cuz if he can, and continue to tear up opposing pitching, he could be a huge addition in 2-3 years. I’m also very excited to see Mahtook! All I’ve heard is positive things about him, and that we could see an accelerated clock with him. Talking with a Scout friend of mine, he said he expects Mahtook to be a .280-.300 hitter with 20 HR potential and 30-40 sb’s, while playing outstanding defense. Apparently he’s comparable to Hunter Pence, which would be a very welcomed addition to our lineup.
Btw, I love that the Rays do this winter program! Gives their prospects a great experience on what to expect when they reach the big time. And it’s always great to see baseball being played in our dome, well maybe not cuz of the some, but definitely great to see baseball being played…it means we’re getting closer to see these guys strap up and play a season!
