Rays 7, Red Sox 2 (click image for boxscore)

The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

THE GOOD: Big Dub. Wade Davis joins the complete game club with his first of the season. It was the Rays 15th, and now David Price is the only pitcher in the rotation without one. Davis tied his season-high of 8 strikeouts and did not walk a batter…JJ Dyn-O-Mite! Joe Maddon didn’t rest any of his regulars last night and some of surprise names provided most of the offense. The big blow was a 3-run home run by John Jaso that gave the Rays an early 3-0 lead.

THE BAD: Up Top. Joe Maddon went with a new top of the order twosome of Desmond Jennings followed by BJ Upton. That’s a lot of speed. But as they say, you can’t steal first base. And last night those two combined to go 1-10 with 6 strikeouts.

THE TELLING: The Rays are now trail the Red Sox by 5.5 games (5 in the loss column)…With the Durham Bulls eliminated from the playoffs, Joe Maddon said 1-2 players will be promoted immediately (Dan Johnson, Matt Bush?) and some more may come later…Rays are now 7-5 against the Red Sox this season.

  • Jose Lobaton was held out one extra day, but is hopeful to return tonight. []
  • The Blue Man Group paid Joe Maddon a visit before throwing out the first pitch last night. [VIDEO]

  • Columbus 5, DURHAM 2: (Durham loses series 3-0) In 6 innings, Alex Torres allowed 3 runs on 7 hits and 4 walks…Matt Bush struck out 2 in 1 shutout inning of relief…SS Tim Beckham went 2-4 with a double and an RBI…DH Stephen Vogt was 3-4 with a double.
  • Fort Wayne 5, BOWLING GREEN 1: (Bowling Green loses series 2-0) Victor Mateo allowed 4 runs in 5 innings…SS Derek Dietrich went 1-4.

  1. Don says:

I would definitely put a big strike out man hitting 2nd, and have MR. dependable Damon hitting 5th...It came to Maddon on a bike ride when he had a vision of Upton getting on base for a change...
Jaso is the man so count on someone else catching tonight or tomorrow We don't need his bat..or do we Joe?

    • LoLJFH says:

We need a .224 bat? Granted, it is better than .176, but.......
We need a guy throwing out <20% of the runners (ok, he got Pedroia last night) with only decent mechanics behind the plate? This is "the man"?

  2. LoLJFH says:

GREAT pitching by Wade, been waiting all year for this kind of performance and it couldn't have come at a better time. Nice work.
Loved the discussion on TV after BJ struck out in 6th (??) about his bat speed and timing being slow. He is a mess with that stupid leg wiggle of his. Is Don Baylor still alive? Couldn't we have hired Carew as a "special advisor"? That thing was minimal the first month and a half and his BA was .280+. It might not matter in 6 weeks tho.
Rays face a young guy tonight they've never seen before. Uh oh... Would love to see some stats sometime on this as I believe we are pretty dismal with that. Don't care if 1-0 so long as Rays get "W".

  3. Steve says:

I love how some people think they could manage the Rays better than JoeMa, its hilarious. Jaso hits one big HR and people want to over look the fact that he still can't catch for shart. We're not going to get any consistent offense out of the back stop so why not have a guy that calls a good game, frames close pitches and throws out base runners at a decent clip? Plus IF Shopp makes contact it has a decent chance of leaving the yard.

    • Tone says:

There is no reason to start Shoppach; his defense is not as good as the numbers indicate and his bat is beyond terrible. I agree that Maddon knows more than any of us, but Shoppach deserves no more starts. He is the worst player I have ever seen. His career is over. Jaso at least has upside and can make contact. Also, September presents other options.

  4. Joe says:

    Matt Moore.

Well, that's just wishful thinking, wanting to relive the 08 Price times.

Guys like Russell and Johnson will probably come up to make the team deeper and I definatley see Chirinos coming back since Lobaton can't stay healthy.

  5. Don says:

Steve, If Maddon starts Shopp again over Jaso, he shouldn't be managing ANY team, let alone the Rays..The team can't hit ,do you understand that?.... the Rays don't win low scoring games...BECAUSE of players (hitters) like Shoppach..I can't make it any clearer...
If Jaso played 90% of the time this year(hey Maddon) he would have hit.260- .270...100 points better than fat ass

  6. Hal says:

    5 1/2
