The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

THE GOOD: The Summer of Kotch. Casey Kotchman’s magical summer just keeps on chugging along. This time it was a first-pitch trot-off home run to lead off the bottom of the ninth. It was also his third hit of the game raising his average to .341, second only to Adrian Gonzalez (.350) in the AL…Jeremy Hellickson. Hellboy has this amazing way of boring you into oblivion. Next thing you know, you look up and he is in the 8th inning and has only allowed 1 run. He is still walking more than he should be (3 last night). But hopefully that will come around…Flash Jennings. Desmond Jennings has now played 16 games since being recalled from Durham. He is hitting .328 despite an 0-3 last night. But he did steal his 7th base. That would be 71 over the course of 162 games.

THE BAD: Dirtbag’s Aim. After the game, Evan Longoria tried to administer the post-win whipped cream pie to the face of Casey Kotchman. Considering the eye problems that Kotch has overcome, we are kinda glad Longo missed.

THE TELLING: Matt Moore was named the International League’s Pitcher of the Week..John Jaso will begin his rehab assignment tonight with the Durham Bulls…Here is a larger version of the picture above. It is hard to see, but that is a gigantic wad of gum that somebody left on the plate hoping Casey Kotchman would step on it. He did not.

THE JUNKYARD DOGS WEBTOPIA

  • Evan Longoria has been taking early batting practice recently in order to get some more one-on-one time with Derek Shelton. We’ll let you guys decide if this is actually a good thing…In the same report we learn that Johnny Damon may have cleared waivers (as expected). The Rays would then be free to trade him to any team. Cork, too funny. I read in SPTimes about Longoria’s BP before everyone else to help him break out of his funk (I think in offseason it will be reported he wasn’t healthy, tried to play, nagging this, hurt that, extra weight gain….and he will bounce back next year “healthy and re-energized” a la Zobrist 2010 vs. 2011). So the best way to do that is to have one-on-one time with DS. I thought “That can’t be good!”. He’s been doing this for a week or so and is in a 5-32 slump (but his swing “feels good”). Ya think? Maybe he should get out there a 2pm with Zobrist and Kotchman, sacrifice a chicken or get a bucket of KFC!

Back leg’d to dead center, I don’t know but you are amazing Kotchman and yes he was the guy who took Manny’s roster spot.

Hellickson was a stud last night, 1 run on an “excuse me, i didn’t want to” swing and that was all he allowed.

I am looking for Texas to blow up Pineda today because I think ROTY will come down to Trumbo vs Hellickson.

    crawford vs jennings,
here’s to your mancrush don. Jennings makes $13+ million less than CC this year. He is under team control through 2015. By the time Desmond Jennings can be a free agent, Crawford will have been paid $94.25 million. We’ll miss you Carl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Does Shelton get any credit for Kotchman? Like raising Lazurus from the dead.

Personally, I think 90% of the batting coaches are interchangable. Few are difference makers, and most are there to help a guy talk through the inevitable ebbs and flows of a season. But if he is the target for so much heat, you have to give him props when one of his players transforms from Mendoza-level to batting champ with deep CF power. It is truly incredible to watch Kotchman have his career year in his hometown.

One other point I was thinking about on Kotchman. Maybe as boy born in St. Petersburg, he is the one hitter who has the blessing of the Trop’s karma. His home/road splits are crazy — .438/.548/.986 at home v. .367/.422/.788 on the road (and the Trop is one of the worst places to hit in the league). Maybe in addition to being able to have a grouper sandwich as his pregame meal, all those grounders swallowed up in the bluegrass infield of Seattle are scooting through on the turf of the Trop? Those line drives to the outfield are getting to the wall so even Casey can make it to 2B. Guy seems to be on the ground an awful lot. Would make sense that the turf benefits him (I think Des may be another beneficiary of the turf over the long term, as I think Crawford was).

Plus the humidity is good for the eyes. We know that.

  6. Don says:

BY the time Jennings is a free agent…CC will have two WS rings and $100 mil+ in the bank…and a .300 lifetime BA and headed to HOF……
GOOD luck on Jenings matching that…but I will have to admit he is better than Maddons replacement….. .230 FULD (who?)

      Don,
Seriously 2 out of the next 7 world series? You’re kidding right? HOF? Borderline at best.

Fuld vs Crawford. Fold has a better OBP. I doubt Crawford WAR would be better than Sam’s and I sure Sam has more defensive runs saved. Even in his slump, Fuld has contributed as much as Crawford has this year.
