Rays 3, Mariners 2 (click image for boxscore)

The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

THE GOOD: Addicted to Farnsville. Joe Maddon is addicted to Kyle Farnsworth. Remember when JoeMa was so adamant that the Rays didn’t have a closer? Farnsville has made 52 appearances this season. He pitched the 9th and/or final inning 48 times. And of the Rays 24 saves, Fansworth has 22 of them…Big Dub. For the first time since July 1, Wade Davis allowed less than 3 runs in a start. And his 8 strikeouts were a season-high, and only the third time this season he has struck out more than 4…Bossman. BJ Upton did his best Desmond Jennings impersonation, playing like a man possessed last night. After his 1-out single in the 5th, he stole second, and then stole third, before coming home on Jaso’s bunt. Upton also made a nice running grab on a ball that would have landed Sam Fuld on Sportscenter (Fuld would have needed to dive to get the ball).

THE BAD: John Jaso. Yes, his sac bunt brought in the first run for the Rays. And he did throw out a runner. But the basestealer was actually safe, and it was Jaso trying to rush a tag and missing a throw from Sean Rodriguez in the 3rd that gave the Mariners their first run. Besides we just really miss Jose Lobaton.

THE TELLING: James Shields will start tomorrow and Jeff Niemann will get an extra day of rest and start on Monday…The Rays still trail the Red Sox by 8 games in the loss column (you can make up wins, you can’t make up losses).

I wonder if they will shift Dietrich around the diamond some just to allow him to move up to AA at some point next year. Since we don’t have any prominent 3B around him in the system he could play there some so that he won’t be stuck behind Lee and Bortnick in the middle of the diamond. My guess is he’ll handle A+ well early on next year and it would be a waste to hinder his development further as a hitter.

Just have to jump in and point out that the Bulls are in a 6-game streak (all on the road), are 21 games over .500, and lead the South Division of the IL by 5 games. Baker gave up three runs without an out in the 1st inning and the 4th run without an out in the 2nd inning. Otherwise, he did OK for four :)

What I liked best about Sam Fuld’s tooth story: he says since he got a hit last night, he’s not sure he should get the tooth fixed.

  4. DOn says:

THe reporter did whole interview and never asked about his tooth(lack of)
    What’s the deal??

Totally disagree w/Joe on the run scored on Rodriguez’ error!!! Official scorer rightly attributed the error to Sean b/c the throw was insanely high & away from the plate!! If JJ had caught it, the runner would have been safe anyway, but would have been nailed w/a good throw!! & the throw was on a basic grounder; no reason for the poor delivery :(
