After today’s game, the Rays announced that Andy Sonnanstine was optioned to triple-A Durham. And to take his spot on the roster, the Rays recalled Brandon Guyer (via @SPTimesRays).

The Rays were already working with an extra reliever with Wade Davis on the DL. And Sonnanstine had made just three appearances in the last 32 games.

It is also interesting to note, that once again, when the Rays felt the need to add a bat, they added Guyer, and not Desmond Jennings. My bad. Completely spaced on Jennings. He has an injured finger and is day-to-day. No sense calling him up now.

Jennings is having some kind of issue with a finger. Maybe his middle finger to the front office but either way, there was no choice here. If they were finally calling up a hitter, it was going to be Guyer.

I agree that Sonny needed to go, but how many platoon outfielders do they need? Ruggiano, Fuld and now Guyer are taking up three roster spots when they can just call up Jennings, get the same or better production, and still have two roster spots left (maybe for a SS who can hit).

There is no shortstop that can hit. Tim Beckham is in AA and there is no chance they will bring him up to skip AAA. We are stuck with Reid and Johnson. Guyer will be a greast addition; hopefully he hits CC hard.

Don’t they see Guyer as more of a starting type?

This is sweet news. Let’s try to get Guyer some at-bats regularly to get some punch in our offense. One possible way to do this is put Ruggiano at 2B some games where he has experience, and play Guyer in LF with Fuld getting some starts there too. We can also start Guyer in RF when a lefty is pitching (Joyce out), and keep Zobrist in the infield. I know Zorilla plays a good defensive OF, but we need to maximize our offensive possiblities. Guyer can also give BJ the occasional day off in CF. Guyer has 15 assists in the OF this year in only 78 games!!! He is either extremely accurate, or has a cannon for an arm, or both. He plays all OF positions, and has good speed.

It will be interesting to see what the Rays do when Wade Davis’s turn in the rotation comes due a week from Tuesday. He will still be on the DL at that point. I think they should recall Cobb, and demote Russell or Ramos. If Davis comes back healthy, send Cobb back down. Gomes appears to be better than Russell and Ramos. Keep him up here. With our strong starters, we don’t really need a long man anyway. When Sonny was spot starting, Cruz tossed 3 innings one game. We can piece it together in a very rare long-relief situation without a long guy because our relievers are usually well-rested.

That’s not a terrible idea with Ruggiano at 2nd base. It has worked out for the Cardinals with Schumaker and we’ve done it with Zobrist so why not? This would be useful as far as getting everyone ab’s

Don’t you guys present any logic to Maddon..I heard Guyer is going to start today…Maddon throwing the baby into the deep end of the pool to learn to swim…but don’t worry he can always pinch hit Shopp for him in the late innings…..Maddon give me a break…Jaso must feel like dirt..
