* This title is blatantly stolen from the Happy Hour with JP Peterson show on 1010 Sports and the show’s producer Bryan Drake. In return we present them with this image as a peace offering (click on pic for a larger version)…P.S. That is Dioner Navarro’s boat he left behind.

Earlier this week we looked at how bad Kelly Shoppach has been this season, and wondered if his days here are numbered. Part of that is based on his contract (he is a free agent after the season) and age (31). But Shoppach is far from the Rays only problem behind the plate.

Of course, catchers that can’t hit can be found in just about every big league ballpark. To get a better sense of just how bad Shoppach and John Jaso have performed this season, let’s compare them to their peers…

The Rays rank 29th in Major League Baseball in a number of key statistical categories. The only team with worse catchers are the Twins. And that is only because Joe Mauer has spent most of the season on the DL.

So it is safe to say that the Rays catchers are the worst catchers in baseball. Or if you prefer, The Deadliest Catchers.

Are we better than the Giants? You gotta wonder if a bad Shoppach is worse than a broken Posey.

I think the Giants backup Eli Whiteside is probably better than our catchers so again the Rays catchers are the worst in baseball

Can we call Greg Zaun out of retirement? Or maybe we can pick up Navi on the cheap from the Dodgers since he's hitting better than both.
