Last month we told you that the Rays would be wearing Tampa Smokers uniforms during their annual “Turn Back the Clock” game (July 2, vs Cardinals). Now we get a look at the uniforms.

If you saw our original post, you might notice something is missing…

On the original Smokers jersey, there was a cigar inside the red stroke under “Smokers,” as can be seen on this Smokers jersey. Also notice that the original jersey has a zipper front while the Rays went with buttons. That is obviously an improvement as the logo isn’t broken into two pieces. But it is not what a Smokers jersey looked like.

On the other hand, the absence of the cigar is a bit troublesome. This was likely done so that it wouldn’t appear as though the Rays were promoting smoking. If true, then why choose the Tampa Smokers for the throwback game?

It was as if the Rays wanted to honor the history of the area, without acknowledging what that history is about.

And in the end, they ended up with something that is both incorrect and probably a bit insulting to some. All in the name of political correctness.

Next time, just stick with the Tarpons. Just make sure to leave the hook out of the mouth.

This is particularly hypocritical of the Rays since they are one of the few major league teams to have a cigar bar in their stadium.

  2. Jordi says:

I want a smokers jersey with “Chong” on the back. Preferably number 420.

Without the arrival of Ybor and the cigar industry, Tampa would be another Cedar Key and the Rays would not exist.

Roll that fact and smoke it.

I hate it, the sun (current logo is a sunburst), probably causes just as much cancer, cataracts, extreme weather, ect. as Cigars do… Okay maybe not… Still, Tampa, and the Tampa Bay region, including St Petersburg should pay homage to the Cigar than they do. I thought it was cool when I heard about the Smokers, and to do this, and ignore the Cigar, is incorrect and disrespectful.

I like the one with the cigar better, but they should just use the button down shirt for it instead of the zipper.

My husband and I love coming to Tampa…we come at least once a year. We have decided that we will no longer go see the Rays….we will go to Ybor City instead. Come on Rays….this political correctness has gone too far! There is NOTHING wrong with showing the cigar, nor is there anything wrong with enjoying a good cigar!!

  7. I agree with the previous posts. Cigars are very important to Tampa’s history and past. And you should not try to change the past for political correctness. If you can’t display the authentic logo of a team because it doesn’t jive with your “Tobacco Free Florida” ad campaigns, then pick another team jersey for turn back the clock night. People are smarter than you think, Rays.
