The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

THE GOOD: David Price. King David did not allow a base runner until the 5th inning and held the Indians to 2 runs on just 5 hits in 8 innings. In his last two starts, Price has allowed just 9 hits in 16.2 innings with 17 Ks and no walks. None…Sam Fuld. Kid needed last night. He went 3-4 with a walk including two of the bigger hits on the night. His RBI-double in the 2nd inning started the scoring. And his RBI-single in the 4th made the game 3-0 and gave the Rays a sense of control…Joyce and Zobrist. There were players on this team we knew would be good. And there were players we knew would suck. But if this team was going to compete we knew the Rays needed big years from the guys in the middle. The guys we thought could be good, but weren’t sure. At the top of that list were Ben Zobrist and Matt Joyce. So far, good. And last night both homered.

THE BAD: Reid Brignac. 0-5. Including the postseason, the Rays have played 55 games since Briggy Baseball last had an extra-base hit. That is a span of 117 plate appearances.

THE TELLING: BJ Upton has dropped his appeal and will start serving his 2-game suspension today…Joe Maddon said Andy Sonnanstine will likely stay in the rotation and start on Sunday. Why? WE HAVE NO IDEA.

He struck out 5 adn walked 1…JP Howell struck out 2 in 1 inning of relief…Jake McGee struck out 4 in 2 shutout innings…The Bulls had just 4 hits, but Justin Ruggiano’s solo home run in the first inning was all they needed.
  • Chattanooga 5, MONTGOMERY 2: Chris Archer continues to not dominate in double-A. We don’t want to say he is pitching poorly. But it isn’t good either. Yesterday he gave up 4 runs (3 earned) in 5 innings. He struck out 4 and walked 3…SS Tim Beckham went 0-4 and the Biscuits had just 3 hits.

Joe, I love your comment at the end of your statement.

“Joe Maddon said Andy Sonnanstine will likely stay in the rotation and start on Sunday. Why? WE HAVE NO IDEA.

I asked a similar question to the guys on the broadcast last night, but they didn’t read it on air.
The greatest sports mystery, how is Sonny in the Major Leagues?

Oh well maybe they will score 8+ Sunday. Go Rays!

    • werD says:

this question was asked by yours truly, ad naseum, before the season began. It was never fully answered, and to be honest, usually ended with more questions being asked than answered.

When Howell comes back, who goes???

  2. Don says:

Already got my joemaddon bank ready(BY the recliner) set for launch at Sonnanstine Sunday after the 1st Bal. home run or 5 walks which ever comes 1st….but I have to be careful the old lady says if I break the TV I have to buy her a 52″ 3D….dont know if The jerk is worth it….

  3. phil says:

Does anyone know what minor league team Josh Sale, Drew Vettison and Justin o’conner are playing with ?

  4. Sarah says:

My prediction: Andy will pitch five strong innings on Sunday.

    • Mark says:

I agree with Sarah. I’m really not too concerned with Sonny in the rotation for the time being. Keep in mind that Tuesday was his first start in a long damn time.

Is he a permanent solution? Absolutely not. But can he give us 5-6 innings of solid pitching on a short-term basis? I think he can. It might not be the prettiest but I believe he is capable of getting it done this Sunday.

ALSO, where’s the love for BJ? Everyone enjoys commenting on his ‘brainfarts’ on the basepaths, but last night BJ made two very heady plays. First of all, he laid down a perfect bunt when the game was only 1-0 Rays to spark the team and then he made a great slide at home to avoid the tag. Not to mention, he crushed a 2 run double late in the game.

Nice to see Kotch continue to have success, as he had two hits too.

Overall, a great team win! Keep it up!

      • St. Aug Ryan says:

Do you watch him pitch? He has a career 5.17 ERA He gives up HR’s like it is his job. He should be the permant HR Derby pitcher in the All Star game.
As far as BJ, for every good/great play he makes, he makes 2 or 3 bad plays or whiffs 4 times. Way to inconsistent to count on a regular basis.

  5. Ro says:

I’m with Sarah and Mark. He can do it. He’s been a good long reliever. That’s what he is now. A starter he is not, but he’s gonna work it out on Sunday. I have faith.
