Joe has been harsh on Reid Brignac in recent days for his punchless bat, which Joe still believes is a massive hole in the Rays batting order.

But Joe is a fair man. So Joe will give props when warranted. Briggy deserves them today when he came up big defensively in a 5-3 Rays win.

Joe has stated in the past that for a guy to overcome a woeful batting average with zero extra-base hit capability, he better be Omar Vizquel or Ozzie Smith. While Briggy will never wipe those players’ names from the memory of baseball fans, his leather came up huge today.

Whether it was grabbing a line drive or starting an important double-play to end the game in a(nother) Rays win, Briggy was getting the job done today… in the field.

This was a game that the Rays weren’t their normal selves, sans the power of Zorilla who is hotter than Rachel Watson right now. Wade Davis gutted through five innings and Kyle Farnsworth sure didn’t appear to be closer material today as he has in the past.

When pitchers are struggling, defense is even more critical. Who knows what the Orioles would have done without Briggy making that nice play to start a twin-killing in the ninth? Glad Joe didn’t have to find out.

Good job Briggy! Now go work with someone other than Derek Shelton and at least try to get that average above .240, huh?

I am surprised with the early season success the Rays have had. With the departures of some key players, they have a decent shot this year.

Honestly, I didn’t think they were as bad as they looked when the were 1-8, and I don’t think they are as good as they look now.

WHat if brig & shopp playing at same time…2 holes in lineup
    Brig &Shopp & S rodz. …….3 holes
    Can the Rays afford that?
