Wow, what a game. Joe suspects the Rays 5-0 win over the White Sox was exactly what Rays fans had hoped for before the season, much less Merlot Joe Maddon.
The Rays would need solid starting pitching. And they got just that. David Price, easily his best start of the season. Fanned nine eight innings. (Thanks to Joel Peralta, it was free pizza!).
And if the Rays are to contend for a postseason berth they will need strong defense and they sure got that Monday, as Tampa Bay finally beat Rays killer Edwin Jackson. The Legend of Sam Fuld continues to grow. His defensive gem diving for a catch in center would have been his highlight regardless if he had a hit or not. Instead, Mr. Monday night got four.
The way Fuld plays on Monday nights, he just might be the answer to the Rays usual dreary Monday empty seats. (Not a cheap shot, few teams draw well on Monday nights).
It wasn’t just the Legend of Sam Fuld. Reid Brignac pretended to be Ozzie Smith diving to his left behind SRod to nab a grounder and fire to Casey Kotchman for an out. The only thing left out of Brignac’s Wizard of Oz impersonation was a backflip and throwing to Kotchman on one hop.
Even Kotchman himself had some nice scoopage.
This was the kind of a ballgame that makes Joe forget Rachel Watson, even for a brief moment. Chicks may dig the long ball but Joe digs strong defense and top-notch pitching.
