Cool story on the history of African-American baseball in Tampa. Stu, please, please, PLEASE, can we get one of these teams in a “throwback” game ASAP? Thanks (via TBO.com)…

“Many Tampa Bay area residents may recall old baseball team names like the Tampa Tarpons and the St. Petersburg Saints. That’s in part because our contemporary ball team, the Rays, have used each of those names on “throwback” uniforms…Less recognized are the Tampa Black Smokers, Pepsi Cola Giants, Tampa Rockets, St. Petersburg Pelicans, Plant City Aces and the Polk County All Stars. These were the Bay area’s African American teams, formed when everything from schools to sports were segregated in the South.”

  1. Joe D. says:

The Rays did already use the senior league St. Pete Pelicans throwbacks….

  2. The same author has a longer piece on the same subject in the Jan-Feb 2010 issue of Cigar City magazine, available at the Tampa History Center. It’s a great read. Highly recommended.

There was also the Tampa History Center’s exhibit a few months ago. That was phenomenal.

BTW, the same issue has an article on Joe Redner and his fame and battles. That’s a good read too.
