The Red Sox spent a lot of money this off-season making their roster better and it is to believe that they are the favorites to win the AL East. But does that make the Yankees “underdogs”?
Mark Teixeira thinks so…
“We’re the underdogs this year,” Teixeira said. “I love it. No one is picking us right now. Everyone in here should be looking forward to winning a championship. When you put on the pinstripes that is exactly what your goal should be every year. I think everyone understands that just because the public may not be picking us it doesn’t mean we don’t believe it in here.”
No one is picking the Yankees? First of all, we are not sure anybody has picked anything yet. But if we are going to go that far, let’s look at the odds to win the 2011 World Series. Bodog.com has the Yankees at 13/2, which is only behind the Phillies (13/4) and Red Sox (5/1). Yep, sounds like nobody expects the Yankees to do well this year. That sound you just heard, was our head hitting the desk.
In the meantime, if Teixeira really thinks the Yankees are “underdogs” with a $200 million payroll, then it only means two things: 1) he is admitting he is overpaid; and 2) he thinks his GM is an idiot.
