Wondering why the Rays still haven’t announced the Jason Bartlett trade as being official? Well, we now (probably) know which pitcher is holding up the deal. Cesar Ramos is listed as being on the DL for his Mexican League team and hasn’t pitched in a nearly a month (big hat tip to RaysRenegade.com).

  • The Rays have re-inked JP Howell to a one-year, $1.1 million deal. The deal also includes “some incentives” which are undoubtedly linked to the number of times he can say “dude” during the season. [The Heater]
  • Even more importantly, Cliff Lee has spurned the Yankees advances and will sign with the Phillies. [MLB Trade Rumors]
  • The Nationals are “aggressively pursuing” a trade for either Zack Greinke or Matt Garza. But a major league source told Adam Kilgore that it is “difficult to see them actually pulling it off.” [The Washington Post]
  • Rays Prospects has the Rays minor league all-star team. [Rays Prospects]
  • Rays Prospects also spoke with John Sickels about the Rays farm system. [Rays Prospects]
  • Is there anyway the Rays can convince five counties to fund a new stadium the same way Milwaukee did? [Shadow of the Stadium]
  • Bill sent along this picture of Rays xmas tree. Pretty impressive. [Flickr]

Agreed. Storen would be an interesting return for someone like Garza. Haven't heard any other names I was interested in from the Rangers, Brewers or Cubs.

I thought the AL east teams with all the MONEY get the best players?.....How could Lee go to Phil. for less money....
WHere's one of those "money" geniuses to explain this to me?
No Crawford, No Lee.... is the big slum (New York city) losing its appeal to the best players...most of their current over payed players are now reaching over the hill status....
    Doc. H + Lee...........oh no National League....
Big bats at Boston...oh no American League ...
Do I smell World Series in December??

Really glad to have Howell back! I know he won't be back til May at the earliest but we need all the bullpen help we can get. Stu said payroll was going to be around 45-55 mil...and by my estimation, we have about 34 mil committed to guys right now. I'd like to see us take care of Balfour with a 2-year/$7 mil deal, then bring in Guerrier for 2 years/$8.5 mil...that still gives us some money to acquire some pop to protect Evan! I'd like to see us do something soon...

Aj - so would we all..Balfour wants 3 years so give him 3 yrs for $9M before the red sox scoop him up ...Also would like to see them sigh Jon Rauch from the twins and Johnny Damon

I think Friedman will go 2 year with a team option for a 3rd...I don't think they like giving relievers 3-year deals due to the question marks surrounding them. I like Rauch, and am all for him...and I think Damon just makes perfect sense! Adding him and possibly a Derek Lee would really protect Longo, and give us a really solid order. Nothing like NY or Boston, but with our rotation, we really just need a solid lineup to contend!

I guess the Rays lost their real Christmas tree to FA, I hope we get some compensation for that.

The fact that Yanks didn't get Lee coupled with a possible Pettite retirement would suddenly give the Rays a shred of hope at making the wild card. Rays starting pitching would be clearly superior to the Yanks at that point. Even if they land a guy like Grienke, I'd still take the Rays SP.

Actually thats a thought....IF the Yankees don't sign another frontline pitcher...It could be the Yankees oldtimers vs. the kids from Tampabay....for the playoff spot....
That of course is IF their record is good enough...
Toronto and Baltimore might ruin a playoff spot coming from the AL East....
