With the Rule 5 draft just around the corner, Baseball America says Rays prospect Aneriy Rodriguez is “the most likely player to be picked.”
Rodriguez is a starting pitcher that the Rays received from the Rockies for Jason Hammel prior to the 2009 season. Last year he went 6-5 with a 3.80 ERA and 94 strikeouts in 113 innings.
If Rodriguez is selected, he would have to make his new team’s big league roster in 2011 or be offered back to the Rays.
All players with at least 5 years minor league experience (4 years in some cases) and are not on the 40-man roster are eligible for the Rule 5 draft. The rule is designed to protect players that may be good enough for the big leagues but for whatever reason haven’t made it yet for their current organization.
