Jose Canseco hasn’t played in the big leagues since a 76-game stint with the White Sox in 2001. But Ozzie’s twin is not retired. In fact, he may get a chance to play winter ball in Puerto Rico.

This is after playing 11 games this past summer for an independent team in Laredo. Prior to that, Canseco, 46, hadn’t played organized ball since 2006, again in an independent league.

So if you are the Rays, a team that loves “under-the-radar” types, would you give Canseco a spring training invite? You could do worse with $400K. But there is also a lot of baggage.

Pop quiz hot shots: What if you had to choose between Canseco and Gary Sheffield as the Rays 2011 right-handed DH. Canseco will play for $400K. Sheffield wants $4 million. What do you do?

You have to choose either Sheffield at $4 million or Canseco at $400K? How about forgo a DH?

I’d be willing to go with Sheffield at $1 million plus performance incentives. Even if Canseco played for free, you’d be giving up a roster spot.

  2. I’d give him a shot in a hearbeat, especially over Sheffield and that cost. What’ve you got to lose? You invite him and you garner a little press. If he hits then you found a DH on the cheap that can’t be as bad as Burrell was.

I like Sarah’s idea about Sheffield for $1 mil + incentives! That seems more than worth it to me! Friedman is not going to sign canseco, so I don’t know why we’d even have to answer that!

Re-sign Willy Aybar? Or anyone else. Forget those guys. They’re both too far gone and can only detract from team chemistry.

    Wait…so this isn’t a joke?

If Canseco looks anything like he used to, is there any way the guy is clean? Hard to be a monster at age 46 naturally. Gotta imagine the drug testing is a little more lax for him in the PR league, where he will surely sell more tix for them.

Hideki Matsui just got signed by the Oakland. Their goes that idea for the Rays everyday DH. Jim Thome is still available.

Regardless of how much flack we sometimes give them, this is a smart management team. Taking a chance on a player like Canseco whose been out of the bigs for almost 10 years is unfathomable. Sarah’s idea of Sheff at $1m + incentives is the only plausible option, but even then I suspect they’d fear his impact on the young guys. Looks for a couple of signings of players in their early 30s, coming off seriously down 1-2 years. Beniot’s success last year means every other team out there is looking for this year’s JB and hurts our chances of success in that mold.

For the full-time dh spot, I’d much rather have Vlad or Damon! Matsui would’ve been fine, but those two guys are superior…I really hope we don’t just sit on our hands offensively…we gotta protect Longo at least!

  11. Gus says:

Please play the young people. We have several gentlemen in Durham who deserve a shot at the bigs over washed up PED users like Canseco, Sheffield, Burrell and Kapler. Tired of that. Ruggiano. Anderson. Perez if he’s still with the team. Any of those guys deserve to follow the Great Pumpkin, whose call up was 3 months too late.

  12. a.j. says:

I’m all for Anderson getting a shot…and Perez showed signs in ’08, but hasn’t done anything since…and all Ruggiano has done is prove he can put up decent numbers at Durham, but terrible performances in Tampa! Perez could be the #4 or 5 outfielder without being too shabby…and Anderson could step in at first base or left field very nicely! It depends on what we do with our money…We have a bullpen to build first!

Four words: Designated Hitter Andy Sonnanstine

    • Sarah says:

I love it! He’s cheap, he’s available, and he’s shown he’s willing to do whatever it takes to play.

      • Charles says:

He also had every chance to complain about his role and never disrupted the team, which is something I’m pretty sure we’ll never say about Sheff or Canseco.

Plus, Sonny has a career 106 OPS+ – dude can rake!

Really??? Maybe the head of Ted Williams is available. How about Daryl Strawberry?
