Ken Davidoff of Newsday has a few interesting nuggets on the Rays…

  • Johnny Damon is eyeing the Braves, Orioles and Rays, noting that Damon calls Florida home. The Rays do need a DH, and Damon fits the Rays M.O.
  • Davidoff says it is unlikely that BJ Upton will be traded, noting that losing both Upton and Carl Crawford would be “quite a blow.”
  • Andrew Friedman on rebuilding the bullpen: “Over the last three or four years, we’ve made five really good bullpen moves,” Tampa Bay executive vice president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said, “but that’s over four years. Basically, we’re trying to replicate that in one offseason. It’s going to be difficult.”

I don’t know what Damon’s asking price would be, but he would be the perfect DH for this team. He isn’t going to give you 30+ homeruns, but when is the last time this team had a DH that could give you 20+? Hell, when is the last time this team even had an EVERYDAY DH? He would fit right in with the easy going clubhouse and Maddon philosophy. Lord knows he can’t throw, but we all know how Maddon likes players who can do different things, and Damon could give someone the night off by playing in the outfield. If Burrell can play outfield for the World Series Champs, then Damon can play a few nights for this outfield.

I would definitely like it if the Rays got Damon.
