Rays Find Injury For Sonnanstine, Place Him On DL
Andy Sonnanstine, Jeremy Hellickson August 2nd. 2010, 3:08pmNeeding a spot on the roster for Jeremy Hellickson, the Rays today placed Andy Sonnanstine on the DL with a strained left roster spot hamstring. The move is retroactive to July 23, so he is eligible to return on August 7. If he had been demoted, he would not have been eligible to return until August 13.

How can they retro that far back? Date of his last appearance?
That is correct, but there must be a limit of 10 days. If they retro’d all the way to his last outing he could be back tomorrow (I think). So must be required to spend at least 5 days on the DL.
So, does anyone monitor this DL stuff, anyway? Do you need a doctor’s note?
i think it just has to be backed by medical documentation if MLB thinks it’s fishy and decides to look into it. Ollie Perez conveniently went on the DL after struggling very badly and a day after the Mets were trying to find a roster spot to bring up Jon Niese. MLB announced an official investigation into Ollie’s injury because that situation “needed clarification”

just wondering but do you think that Garza and Shields were looking in the rear view mirror and saw Hellboy coming down the road? fear can be a great inspiration.
Poor Sonny, always the one getting picked on. He should have gone on the DL for a strained bobblehead-altering arm tendon.
I’d also like to take a moment to appreciate Andy Sonnanstine. Not that I’m comfortable when he’s on the mound, but he seems to handle his huge demotion with some grace. Let’s hope the Rays find a nice national league team (didn’t he once strike out like 7 Marlins in a row? And doesn’t he hit about .300? National league would be perfect) that needs a fifth starter.

Gotta love baseball, this being one of the reason why! Hopefully, Andy’s (cough, cough) injury isn’t life threatening or anything.
