The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

THE GOOD: The Tampa Bay Rays. David Price had 2 scoreless innings, 1 hit, no walks and a strikeout. Evan Longoria had 2 plate appearances and he was on base both times, including a double and a walk. Rafael Soriano tossed a 1-2-3 inning. Yeah, the Rays did not embarrass themselves…Come A Long Way. This is a franchise that once used Dewon Brazelton as their opening day starter and last night their #4 starter started the All-Star game. And this is a franchise that once had Lance Carter as their only All-Star representative (who didn’t even play) and last night the Rays had 3 starters. When the Rays play their next game, take a moment to sit back and reflect on that.

THE BAD: The FOX TV Radar Gun. David Price throws hard. He doesn’t throw 100. At first, some thought he was amped up. But then we saw similarly overclocked fastballs from other pitchers…Bizarro Baseball. Evan Longoria was replaced in the AL lineup by Ty Wigginton. This was seriously messin’ with our heads.

THE TELLING: David Price became the first pitcher taken #1 overall to start the All-Star game…The Rays will open the second-half in Yankee Stadium where there will certainly be ceremonies for the passing of both Bob Sheppard and George Steinbrenner. Also, Saturday is Old-Timer’s Day at Yankee Stadium.

  1. Carey says:

On Hellickson: Doesn't he have to be brought up before the "roster expansion" to be eligable for the playoffs. If that is the case, I think it would be prudent to bring him up a little early just in case he ends up being light's out and we want to use him (out of the pen) for the playoffs.

  2. John S says:

Girardi managed that game as poorly as anyone could. Wigginton is for Longo? I guess they were not trying to win. Not everyone has to play like Evan Meek.

The AL is down and then have a real "all star" lineup of Bautista, Buck and Konerko, I mean really? Are we supposed to make back with that.

  3. Jim says:

I think that last part of "The Good" is a great point. I think in a very short time, we have gotten a little spoiled as a fan base. I remember as recent as 2007 when this team was pretty bad (and I was throwing the remote at the TV every other night). At times, I definitely get frustrated with this year's Rays, but they are a damn sight better than the old school Devil Rays.

  4. ramedy says:

The thing about the FOX radar gun is that it's not able to differentiate between a hard 98-mph fastball like Jimenez' and a soft one like Price's. That's why they have Tim McCarver.

    • KillaTapes says:

I almost spit out my beer when I heard him say that! He's such a hack, by far the most annoying broadcaster other than Joe Morgan in my opinion.

  5. Eric S says:

Girardi did do a poor job managing that game. I think they should manage it like the old days. Let some of the starters play the whole game. They deserve it. Ty Wigginton is a nice player, but he shouldn't have played at all. Thorton shouldn't have pitched at all. Not pinch running for Ortiz was flat out dumb. Heck you can put in a pitcher to run for him if he wanted.

I am still annoyed that Chris Rose called David Price David Wright at the beginning of the telecast. That just ticked me off to no end, but I guess I am alone in that.
