The Rays announced today (via press release) that August 13 will be “Turn Back the Clock Night” at the Trop. The Rays will wear the 1970 Tampa Tarpon uniforms being modeled by Evan Longoria (right). The Orioles will wear all-orange uniforms that were worn only two times in 1970 (seen here).
The use of the Tarpons uniform is an interesting choice with all the recent debate about the location of a new Rays stadium.
This is the third time the Rays will don the Tarpons uniforms having done so previously in 1999 and 2006. Other “Turn Back the Clock” games have included the unforms of the St. Pete Saints (2000, 2007), the University of Tampa (2005), the St. Pete Pelicans (2008) and the original Devil Rays (2009).
The Village People will perform after the game.

Prof: any report if tarpons gear will be on sale as well?
No word on that, but I think that is standard practice.
The Tampa Smokers (FSL of the 1950′s) with the cigar on the front would be a much better uniform choice this one, which doesn’t have a fish.
For one night, the smart alecks on Sports Center who call the team “Tampa” will have the team name correct.
Don’t they always wear this teams uniform or the St. Pete whoevers (Tarpons)?
I thought the team should’ve been the Tampa Bay Tarpons from Day One. I wish it had been, especially now that it’s just “Rays”.
A crumpled Benjamin says somebody slips up and calls them the Tampons…
Seems these should be saved for that rare occasion when the Reds come to town for interleague. And, since the Tarpons were a Reds affiliate, they should wear them.
Personally, I think they should stick to the old ’98 unis for “throwback” days, or the Pellicans (which, I believe, weren’t even a MLB affiliate). What’s next, St. Pete Cards unis?
Clearly you were not at ’90s night last season when the ’98 Uni’s came out. I believe the team and the organization agreed unanimously to burn those. Bad night, bad rainbow look, not good.
HELP where can i buy this hat?
