[THE HANGOVER] The One Where We Discuss Joyce’s New Fire, Pat’s New Bat And CC’s New All-Star Role

THE GOOD: Lighting A Fire. Maybe it is just a coincidence, but Matt Joyce had 3 more hits and 2 walks last night and is now 8-8 with 2 walks since Justin Ruggiano was promoted. Sure the Rays needed a right-handed bat to replace Gabe Kapler. But when time came to promote an outfielder, it was not Joyce and that probably stung a little. Joyce is now 23-67 (.343) in 18 games with Durham and has 15 walks to just 12 Ks. He is also 7-16 (.438) versus lefties at Durham including a single last night.
THE BAD: Pat is Back. Pat Burrell hit another home run for the Giants. He is now 11-27 (.407) with 3 doubles and 2 home runs in 10 games.
THE TELLING: The Rays still have the highest percent chance of making the playoffs according to PECOTA. The Rays are at 79.3%, followed by the Yankees at 70.1%. The Red Sox have a 43.7% shot…Carl Crawford is now second in the All-Star voting among AL outfielders and is just 108K votes behind Ichiro Suzuki. It looks like Crawford will indeed make his 4th all-star appearance and first start…Jason Bartlett went 2-3 with a walk and a double for Durham. He will play with Durham again today and could rejoin the Rays tomorrow.
WHERE THEY STAND: The Rays are tied with the Yankees at 40-23 and are 4 games ahead of the Red Sox in the Wild Card. After 63 games in 2008, the Rays were 37-26.

He was pulled after just 81 pitches…Dale Thayer was pounded for 5 runs in the 8th inning and took the loss…Matt Joyce was 3-3 with 2 walks…Desmond Jennings was 2-5 with a double. He is now 16-31 in the last 7 games…Jason Bartlett went 2-3 with a double and a walk in his rehab start.
- MONTGOMERY: Alex Cobb gave up 3 runs in 7 innings. He struck out 4 and walked 2. He had only allowed 2 earned runs in 5 previous starts and now sports a 1.89 ERA…Matt Fields hit his 7th home run…Matt Sweeney was 0-4 with 3 strikeouts one day after hitting his first home run with Montgomery.

When can Jennings be promoted without starting his arbritration clock?
He’s clear on both the arb and free agency clock already. So he could be called up today and the Rays would still get 3 more years after this one before he is arb eligible.
Yeah, the only problem would be that he needs to play evryday. And we can’t afford to sit S-rod and Zobrist now. As soon as Barty is back, I still want s-rod getting all his abs.
Well, Pat the Rat did move closer to BALCO …. ERRRRRR… back to the National League.
I also think there should be a decree that any time the Rays play in Atlanta, it should be on a weekend. I am thoroughly bummed.
I know its early… but as time goes by… I still feel the Rays missed something with Burrell….you can NOT go from .200 on one team to .400 plus home runs on a different team…did he have a revelation…or getting away from Maddon and our “hitting” coach make that much difference?
Sorrento “has a mean streak”…well I wish he could help Shields, Garza and Davis …they look like they want to cry when they give up a few hits(walks) early in the game…ala Scott Kazmir!
Don, I CANNOT believe you are writing this. How many angry posts in which you berated the RFO for sticking with Burrell did we all have to read previously? Should we put together a “Don’s greatest anti-Burrell posts” compilation or do you actually remember? You are clearly a shameless “Monday morning quarterback”.

Yeah, here’s an opionion: He’s a crybaby tool who tanked it in a Rays uni to get back into the NL. I don’t care if he wins the home run title in the NL, I’m glad his ass is out the door, and I’m pissed the door didn’t hit him on the way out.
Bully for him. He’s gone. Now go join a Giants’ fan page if you want to dream about him every night, because I can guaran-damn-tee you that nobody else here wants a blow-by-blow of how much better he’s doing now (you know … against the Orioles).
In short…YOU don’t know whats going on….or care…right? And don’t tell me about your blows…..Please!
Pat the Bat is facing the Orioles; lets not get carried away quite yet. When he saw his whole existence as a person be taken away from him for a few weeks before the Giants called, most people would have that event focus him.
I’d be surprised if he does this for very long. If he keeps it up, maybe he’d be in the small group of guys who just couldn’t DH. But I like the Rays a whole lot better without PB and Kapler. Let the kids play.
