Stuart Sternberg’s comments yesterday were firm, but they weren’t unexpected. Since then he has ramped up the rhetoric, even threatening to sell if Tampa and St. Pete can’t work together

“If I don’t get the sense there’s real cooperation, I’d sell the team,” Sternberg said this afternoon at a Tampa Tribune editorial board meeting.

Now this is getting serious. Sternberg is one of the best owners in any sport. And no matter who the new owner would be, it would be the equivalent of giving Harrison Ford’s character to Ben Affleck in the prequel.

Somewhere, Vince Naimoli is chuckling to himself.

Other highlights from Sternberg’s visit with the Tribune

  • He has lost “between $10 million and $100 million,” investing in the Rays.
  • Taxpayers or private investors will have to pick up more than half of the cost of a new stadium that will cost at least $500 million.
  • Construction on a new stadium will not begin in the next 2-3 years, saying it will take time to finalize a stadium proposal.
