Cliff Lee Might Soon Be A Yankee; Rays Fans Might Soon Poop Their Pants

Just when you were starting to feel better about Rays comes this news from Ken Rosenthal…
The Yankees are going to end up with Mariners left-hander Cliff Lee. The only question is whether they land him in a trade this summer or as a free agent this winter — and a trade might not be as far-fetched as it appears…True, the Yankees currently boast five healthy and effective starters. True, they simply could wait for Lee to become a free agent and sign him in the offseason without losing any young talent. But one rival executive says the Yankees will be undeterred in their pursuit of Lee on the trade market…His reasoning is simple…“Top of the rotation starter,” the exec says of Lee.
And here is another reason for the Yankees to go after Lee sooner rather than later: In 12 career starts versus the Rays, Lee is 6-4 with a 2.51 ERA and a .597 opponent OPS. Sure the Rays have beaten Lee both times they have faced him this season. And sure the Rays are 18-7 versus lefties this season. But would anybody be surprised if Lee was in pinstripes and he pitched a 1-hitter against the Rays on August 1?

Two years ago we almost had Jason Bay. Instead Boston got him. I was worried at the time, but in the end it all worked out. Boston got Jason Bay . . . we got the division title and ALCS title. If the Yanks get Lee and we get the WS title, fair enough.
It will make me absolutely sick if the Yankees do indeed sign Lee and Crawford. Man, I hate that team.
eh . . . yeah, Crawford is another story.
Not to be one of those people who complain about how much money the Yankees spend and how they buy championships, but at some point, shouldn’t the fans start getting upset when they DON’T win 120 games a year and every WS title? When you spend that much money to buy all the best talent available, anything less than a ring should be a major disappointment. I just wish it were somehow possible for the Rays to serve up that disappointment via WS defeat, but that’s never going to happen obviously.

They don’t need Lee this season. They’ll do it so no one else can get him. But there will still be national sportswriters saying how great for the game it is for there to be a team everyone hates or some such nonsense.
