Per Marc Topkin:

The Rays have designated DH Pat Burrell for assignment, and selected Hank Blalock from Triple-A Durham.

Burrell, who signed a two-year, $17 million deal before last season, had been a disappointment, with his struggles continuing this season (hitting .202). Blalock is expected to be here at the Trop around gametime.

He sucked. But for a blogger that feasts on crapisms, The Bat will be missed.

This could be the happiest day of my year so far.

Sanity has prevailed! Sweet Sweet Day. Anything is better than Fat Burrell. I hope Hank makes good use of the Yanks short porch this week. Now if only 2/3 of the line up can pick up some rbi knocks while pitching maintains…crossing my fingers(and toes).

  6. John says:

Thank you Andrew! Good Bye Pat!! Great job Prof — You had it before anyone else!

  7. Don says:

Don???? What? It took me a year to get rid of that guy…He’s still not CUT!
Happiest day in Rays history since making it to the Worlds Series!
Maddon still hasn’t learned… he has Pena, Upton, Navaro, and Kaplar all in a row today! Lets go over/under for strike outs for the four horseman…
I’ll take 10…like to go higher but they might pinch hit…Blalock?
Merry Christmas Rays Fans! Beat those powerful Mariners!

Finally! Oddly enough, I was talking to an older baseball fan last night at the Trop and our hatred of Burrell in the lineup was the only thing we agreed on. That made us total BFFs. Otherwise he was comically wrong on everything else.

  9. Brian H says:

don???? what do you owe me. do i need to find your direct quotm that this would NEVER happen. you are wrong as expected from myself and probably anybody who knows you.

  10. Sean says:

About time. I don’t know if it’s been like this for a while, but I was at the game last night and every time Burrell came up to bat, and especially every time he inevitably flew or struck out, there were very noticable boos.

  11. rich says:

Although it wasnt Blalock, the DH slot (Abyar) hits a walk-off HR in the 9th on the same day. Maybe we should consider this a good omen ……….

  12. Don says:

I’ve been telling everyone for a year Aybar should be the DH..EVERYDAY!
    Burrell playing and Aybar sitting….what a Joke….
But anyway its over now Willie…if Maddon doesn’t DH you now…he needs to be run out of town….Willie youdman!

  13. Mike Roosa says:

About time he’s gone. So glad. We still need the bats to wake up though.

  14. JMS says:

Whew, long time coming. Maddon had done the right thing in benching him lately, glad Friedman finally took him off the to-do list. Hopefully Blalock can take some AB’s at first base until Carlos gets on track, and let Aybar DH. We all know Pena will get hot, but in the meantime the team can’t afford Bartlett at .243, Upton .214, Navi .182, Pena .180, Kapler .222 all in the same lineup every day. Guys need to get hot, so the pitching doesn’t have to do all the work. Nothing personal Pat, but this team had to do something, and you simply didn’t produce for 2 years. Navi’s is next hopefully when Shoppach gets back.

  15. Brian H says:

don say the words…… i was wrong!

  16. Don says:

I’ll be happy to say “I’m wrong” when Burrell is gone and the Rays get NO compensation…The major point was the Rays would not admit it was a mistake…which they have not…
Look S Stern. has probably lost more than $16 in one Wall Street transaction…the real “mistake” in the whole Burrell deal was that a better player (Aybar) was sitting on the bench while a bum was playing!
Do you think the Rays would have won the game yesterday if Burrell was hitting,
which Maddon admitted he would have been!

    • Brian H says:

do you understand what DFA is??? there will be zero compensation for burrell. not sure what your rambling about, frankly i dont care, all the rambling in the world wont change the fact that… YOU ARE WRONG.

Check this out — at least one sports writer in NY wonders if the Mets would consider him:
