Ben Zobrist, Marc Lancaster October 8th. 2009, 6:38amWe are a few days late on this, but we would should take a moment to note that Marc Lancaster is leaving the Tampa Tribune.
It happens every year around this time, but the sense is particularly acute for me today, because it’s my last day on the Rays beat for the Tampa Tribune. I’m on the move to Northern Virginia with my wife and not exactly sure what I’ll be doing in the future, but after six seasons covering baseball full-time—three here and three at the Cincinnati Post before that—I’m eager to try something different.
So the wonder-twins Marc and Marc are no longer…Sure Marc. The Rays can only win 84 games and jump off the bandwagon like it is on fire! We kid, we kid…Thank you for all the hard work and your insight. You will be missed. And good luck with whatever path you may choose.

Thanks for linking the Zobrist story. I was watching the Yankees-Twins game last night, and they were showing the league leaders in OBP — I was surprised to see Zobrist up in the top 4! Even though I watched him every day, I don’t think I quite appreciated his contribution.
I’m one of biggest Zobrist marks ever…I said he was one of the Rays BEST players when everyone else was calling him a “utility” player…
BUT don’t ask me what I would do if they wanted to trade Mauer for Zobrist straight up? thats a tough one….
I think it’s a surprisingly easy ‘No’ on the Rays side. If we did the trade the Rays would be all in for ’10, because Mauer only has one year of team control left, while Zobrist (I believe) has 4.

Pittsburgh is the #1 sports city due to football and hockey….What do those two sports have in common??? A salary cap!!! How can a city have 17 straight losing seasons in baseball and still be the #1 sports city in the country??? Another clear example of why baseball needs a salary cap!!!!
