THE GOOD: David Price Late. From the second inning on, Price worked 6 shutout innings, giving up just 3 hits and a walk. He retired 13 in a row at one point… Reid Brignac. Last night was “The Cajun God of Baseball’s” coming out party. It only took 28 games, but last night Brignac had 4 hits, including 2 doubles and his first big league home run. He even stole a base…Top And Bottom. The top 2 batters and the bottom 3 went a combined 13-24 with 6 runs scored and 6 RBI. The rest of the lineup was 2-15.
THE BAD: David Price Early. After retiring the first batter, the second batter was retired on a ground ball off of Price’s foot. The the wheels came off. The next 5 batters reached base, with 4 scoring, and that quickly, the Rays early 1-0 lead was erased…
THE TELLING: The Rays are now 2-12 in September…Evan Longoria is just the 9th big leaguer to have 30 home runs, 40 doubles and 100 RBI prior to turning 24. The others? Maybe some names you have heard before: Ted Williams, Alex Rodriguez, Albert Pujols, Hal Trosky, Scott Rolen, Eric Chavez, Aramis Ramirez and Miguel Cabrera. [USA Today]…JP Howell worked a scoreless 9th inning. It was his first appearance since Sept. 6…Remember when Carl Crawford was going to steal 100 bases? Or even be the first to steal 80 in 20 years? Not so much. CC is not even leading the AL. His 57 are now 4 behind Jacoby Ellsbury.

If the wild card is still close, I’d hope Maddon would give Sonny and Balfour a couple of long starts against Texas at the end of the season, bat BJ lead-off, play Aybar at 2b, use Cormier in some high leverage situations, let Tom Foley carlessly fill out the line-up card with 4 DHs and match lefty-righty-lefty on every batter after the starters have thrown 140 pitches. Maybe send Longoria and CC over to Tony Romo’s bachelor pad for the weekend without cab fare to get back.
Every playoff game not played in Boston is a $1M more that they can’t throw around to cover up their bad off-season moves. Hell yes they are tanking that series.
I think this is where we say “TGIB” or “thank god it’s Baltimore” (or something like that). Nothing like truly hapless pitching and fielding to remind these guys they are allowed to score a few runs.
Some thoughts:
Gus (causual Fan) Knows more than Maddon…(excp Longo could get a ride in Texas …by some female ….CC..maybe)
Brignac is NOT good enought to play for this team…no matter what he does against Baltimore in a nothing game…. in Sept.
Rays do not have to TANK in Rangers series….Texas will take of that!
Now Burell is a “frustrated” hitter…I’ve been that way all year watching him…
Maddon will stick with “regulars” ….no matter what happens….that has been one of his (Maddon) problems all season…
Just because Burrell chose to show his frustration now, don’t think he hasn’t been feeling it for a very, very long time. The guy has a lot of pride and knows what he was brought in to do and that he hasn’t gotten it done. Take it from someone who watched him through his entire career in Philly and on back into the minors.
You must be worn out….! watching him one year is enough for me…
How do we unload…can’t…nobody is going to pay him now…
He knows that….next year is his last ….then he can live on the $18m the Rays “gave” him!!
