Is Jennings a lock to make it up for Sept. call-ups? I think he is, but your opinion is generally more on-target than mine...

they can't possibly bring Perez, Joyce, and Jennings can they?

    • My guess is that Perez and Joyce are locks for September. Jennings wont be up until next year. The Rays definitely need Perez' speed off the bench and Joyce has big league experience so it doesnt make any sense to just give him September off.

Oh, and at this point does pitching Sonny do anything other than hurt the Rays' chances of moving him in the offseason... or would it make more sense for him to suddenly have a quad injury that requires a trip to the 60 day DL?

Can he be helpful in Sept?

Will he work out of the 'pen?

Do we even want him to, or would it result in that sick gut feeling everytime he takes the mound- a phenomenon I now refer to as the Brian Stokes syndrome?

    • bobrittner says:

Sonnanstine is a concern, but he has had 8 starts at Durham. The last two have been poor, but the first 6 ranged between good and adequate. Without more information about how he is pitching-scouting type reports-it is premature to write him off.

I think anyone on the 40 man roster can be called up after Sept. 1, so it is possible for the Rays to call up Joyce, Perez, Jennings, Davis and more although I think they would have to add Jennings to the 40 man roster first. That would mean dropping someone which they may have to do also when they take Iwamura and Perez off the 60 day DL.

If I am reading it right, the Rays currently have 39 men on the 40 man roster plus Iwamura and Perez on the 60 day DL and thus not counted against that total. When they come off, one person has to be dropped, and if Jennings is added to the roster someone else loses a spot. I am reading that from the Rays site at; I don't know how up-to-date that is or if I have counted correctly.

    • We will see Sonny in September. I think he will work out of the 'pen, but dont be surprised if he makes a couple of spot starts to give the other arms an extra day of rest.
